Rape has become a massive world-wide problem, particularly in highly populated countries where law enforcement is inadequate. There were 32,000 reported incidents of rape in 2022, & the cases we hear about are only the tip of a very large iceberg. Modern society is struggling to find an answer. In the long term, the education of boys will be the answer; they have to learn to respect girls. In the short term, girls are either too afraid to go out, or try to avoid travelling alone. We need urgently to provide all girls at school with comprehensive training in self-defence, and possibly to give them all a panic button which alerts the authorities to their location. And we need to rethink the penalties for this crime which will have to become more of a deterrent.
