Maybe, but I don't watch those shows and I'm still aware of them because they're everywhere.

I'm sure they did. The shows we watched were just as stupid as the ones we complain about today. Our nostalgia and our childhood perception makes us remember them fondly while our constant belittling of those younger than us and our teenage perception make us think of current shows as horrible.

Nah, my sister is 7 years older and I remember when she watched those shows. I watched them with her as well.
