I used to chew on pencils, and once a piece of the metal part at the end got stuck in my throat. it hurt so badly. I haven't chewed on pencils since.

If it's especially painful to swallow (like if it won't go down as quickly as others in the past) I sometimes imagine it tearing up my esophagus on the way down and freak out even more.
