I was trying to explain "sarcasm" to a Korean exchange student. It sounds simple, "verbal irony", but if they don't know either of those words...

"It's when you say something to someone that appears to say one thing but due to the tone of voice is implied to mean the opposite"

Irony; I can't define it without using an example

Like.... Tripping over a Wet Floor sign? Or a house catching on fire because of stress relief candles?

(milks.favorite.cooki): Yeah! I would say something like that, but then they would say don't give us an example, define it and I couldn't. I had a teacher once that gave an example of irony. She said it was like when you said to someone you liked their belt, but then under your breath saying it was ugly. She was a bit of a dumb bitch, had to work even harder for my English gcse.

I love how much cartoons teach us, our teacher didn't even say it like that, it took her a good few minutes to get the words out. Bender should teach more.

I was just thinking about this today! And how it's especially annoying when a person asks you to define a word you used in an argument. Not only is it frustrating if you cant quite explain it, but it kills your side of the argument because you look stupid.

My little brother asked me to explain the word "cliche" to him once. I knew what it meant in my head but I couldn't for the life of me verbalize it. After about five minutes of me stuttering out half-assed definitions I told him: "Maybe if you read a few more books and played a few less video games you'd know it yourself by now." He walked out of my room and left me alone for the rest of the day after that.
