I see there’s a lot of people asking if Kate Middleton will be the new Queen. I say there’s no chance. Queen had a string of huge hits in the 70’s and 80’s and Kate has very little experience in the music industry. amirite?

You have no grounds to correct him because it can go either way. Technically, both are correct. I'd like you to Google "there is a lot of people or there are a lot of people" and then get back to me. It's an ongoing debate, but I believe that it's more of a stylistic choice. That means that one should go with whatever sounds best in the context.

How could it possibly go either way? It's talking about a lot of people, not one person. Therefore it's plural and can only be ''there are''.

But the MAIN noun is "lot." "Lot" is SINGULAR and not plural. If I said "There ___ a group of people," when deciding between "is" or "are" to be the verb, the verb would be "is." It's no different with "lot." Just because it SUGGESTS or TALKS ABOUT plurality does not mean it's plural. I don't know. That's just how I see it.

Her title is not really up for a discussion, however, while we're on the topic; she should be referred to as A Queen seeing as (which someone so nicely pointed out) she is not a queen REGENT and will not be gaining the throne should Will die before her.
