Unless they use a freeze brand, but I'm not sure if thats as popular with cows as it is with horses.

Isn't that an alternative for regular tattoos as well? Not to do it all at once, but to slightly burn the design into the skin a couple of times so it's permanent? I'm pretty sure my brother in law has that.
