Eh. Sometimes they really don't know what to say. They want to help you, but since they haven't been in the situation they really don't know how.

This isn't exactly true. People can understand a situation without experiencing it firsthand.

I agree with you, and was about to post the same thing. I agree, having actual sympathy can help a lot, but some individuals can actually understand your situation from past experiences, or they're smart enough to put the pieces of the problem together. Them understanding only helps if they give you advice though. With this post, there can be many variables, making it not very valid and clear, all in my opinion of course.
