I think kids who are spanked often eventually stop taking their spankings seriously, whereas parents who constantly show love and affection to their children and are rarely disappointed with them will have more obedient children. I know spanking and beating are two different things but my parents did a pretty good job with raising me by simply being disappointed in me when I did something wrong rather than beat or spank me. If they had abused me, I could have grown up to see beating as an okay (or even necessary) thing for parents to do and done the same with my children.

I think spanking for young kids works because it conditions them right away but after you've reached a point then you can switch to disappointment. My parents used to spank me and it kept me from doing bad things and I'd say I turned out just fine.
