+209 Homosexuality is the next era of civil rights, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'd say "current" more than "next", since it's been going on since the late 1960's.

Seems to be at a peak right now, or is it just me?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nah, I'd agree that it is at the peak - probably because of the Internet and social media.

I'd say it will be transexuals next. They already fight for rights, but they've been put on the back burner while homosexuals fight for their rights.

There has been a lot of things about transgender rights recently, but I think the bulk of it is just trying to end employment discrimination, and the rate of violence - I don't think I need to tell you that transgender people have a huge rate of being physically assaulted and murdered.

I was really close with a girl (and by girl I mean anatomically male who should've been born a female) who really looked the part. She was 17 and had been on estrogen and hormone blockers since 12. she was going to have an operation the day after she turned 18. She was attacked, raped and left for dead after a party. She died a week later in the hospital. It's sad because her parents were some of the few who actually understood and supported her.

That's so terrible! Why do people think they have the right to torment other people just because they have a different mindset or a different way of expressing themselves? It's not like she was hurting anybody else by living that lifestyle. I cannot stand ignorant people like that. I'm so sorry for what happened to her.

I've commented on this before, but the LGBT movement has been far too focused on things like marriage and DADT. Anti-violence and anti-discrimination laws, support networks for queers living in poverty, forced into prostitution, forced into homeless, etc., should all be priorities, before worrying about things like same-sex couples having the same rights and legal benefits as opposite-sex couples - which, I might add, is still important, particularly when a same-sex couple has children, but the fact that we are still being bashed in the street and denied jobs and housing based on sexuality should come before couples who are more or less in a comfortable situation.

It should also be the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. You know it STILL hasn't closed?

Those people who voted down will be embarrassed and disappointed with themselves in the future.

It's sad that we even have to ask this question. We're all people, why do we have to hate? Love is love and has no gender.
