+293 Math is important, but knowing how to speak well and write well is way more important in life than math. Math is really important in life you become an engineer, architect, accountant, or some other career in finance or construction. Other than that, only a little math is used. Grammar and spelling is something that is used in life all the time. amirite?

It's funny because there's a very small typo in this post

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What's the typo?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The word "if" is left out of the second sentence even though it should be there, and it also says "grammar and spelling is", even though that's two things, so I think it should be "are". But I'm not too sure.

You can't do well in the interview to become an engineer, architect, or accountant if you don't know how to use proper grammar.

More so than grammar and spelling I would say just effective rhetorical and communication skills.

Math is a very important subject to learn, it's when I'm being taught what 2n-23+45.7x is that it gets ridiculous. I'd say only elementary math is really important in life.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's what I was going to say. Everything up to long division is useful in everyday life.

speaking well and writing well are important, but creative writing and literature analysis are not

Grammar and spelling are fundamentals. So are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In my opinion, they have the same importance and are used the same amount.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah but A LOT of careers use math.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Basic grammar is as important as basic math.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree... a lot of problems are due to lack of basic math literacy. Especially something like personal finance; things like massive debt and subprime mortgages could be avoided, and there are a million other ways to save money if you're able to think things through mathematically.

Math is used a lot more than in just those careers, but I understand that you were just using examples. Still, a child can still use math as well as an adult in a profession. You use things that you can learn in a math class when you check the time on an analog clock, setting an alarm, driving, spending/saving money, eating (like how many calories you are eating), etc. Though I get that you use reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and phonics tons in life, we use math extremely often as well. They are both highly important, in my opinion.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But there's a point in when no one cares about grammar either. You should be able to speak correctly and with correct grammar, but when you have to know what a gerund is, well thats pointless.

You only need grammar up to the 3rd grade level, other than that you don't need it unless for specialised jobs. You need advanced math, however, very often such as for money and rent and interest and whatnot.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree; math and grammar are equally important in general, but if you go into a math specialized job you are only going to need grammar from about fourth grade. However, if you go into a job that is surrounded more by English you are going to use more advanced math (algebra, geometry, trig, etc.)

But both is fatal in understanding the universe. But it's just the Education Continuum again, I think it's hard to argue what's most important.

It doesn't really matter what school teaches you pretty much. They teach you how to learn by teaching other things. You'd be a very different person if you had quit learning after you learned things past a 3rd grade level (basicley all the things you need to know to survive in the real world).
