+747 The best books to reread are the Harry Potter books because then you can see all the crazy foreshadowing you missed when reading them the first time. Like in Chamber of Secrets: "holy shit, Harry feels close to the diary because they're both Horcruxs, how did I miss that?", amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm rereading them all and so far my favorite scene to reread came at the end of GoF. I've discussed this with someone else, but having already read the entire series, it was just so emotionally heavy to go back and read the moment when it all went to hell. The moment Fudge could have stepped up and headed Tom off before anything too horrible happened, but stood and did nothing. The line that gets me the most from that scene is, "We may still be able to save the situation" Fred, Dobby, Lupin, Tonks, Moody, Colin, Dumbledore, Emmeline Vance, Snape and so many more all could have lived had Fudge done what needed to be done right then and there. It's just really amazing looking back on it like that and it makes me a bit angry that they left such an incredibly crucial point of the war out of the film. This wasn't a pointless scene of Harry in charm's class, it was the moment that forever changed the Harry Potter world.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

One of the things that really annoyed me was, I know people have complained about the Epilogue before, but it basically said nothing - it told you who ended up with whom (which you already knew - Harry with Ginny and Hermione with Ron) and their kids names, but it didn't tell you how they cleaned up after the war. What happened to wizard society after something so huge? What about all the dead people - I assume they were given proper funerals, but how did it effect everyone? Did Harry, Ron and Hermione go back and finish Year 7? I just felt the crappy Epilogue told me nothing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

To use your own theory in response, Simon, I shall reply thusly. "How did the world get cleaned up after the war?" IT JUST FUCKING HAPPENED, OK? "Why don't we know more about the after effects of the war on individual character's lives?" BECAUSE SHUT THE FUCK UP, THAT'S WHY!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hmm... I actually liked how you're left to your own devices on what happened next. You're simply left knowing that it all works out, but you kinda have to decide how.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, it's just being lazy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it's nice that she summed things at all. The books are proof enough that she's anything but lazy with her writing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hermione;s the only one that went back to Hogwarts. Also I just quoted AVPM.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hahahaha you just reminded me of this (don't worry, it's not even bad, i really don't know why you have to log in to watch it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS7xDS24GGE

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, but Harry Potter isn't the only series to do this . . .

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think we know that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But the point that I see from anon saying this is if THAT is the only reason the OP thinks Harry Potter is the best series to reread, then all books should be considered the best series to reread because all series of books have that trait in common. Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events", that "Children of the Red King" series, and the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series are prime examples.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I see what you mean.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Chauncy Pickles): Please tell me you are not comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a.k.a. the series that could have been written by a fourth-grader, to Harry Potter.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay. I am not comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians to Harry Potter. I am, however, comparing Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympian" series to J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. Considering that both series are intended for children, or at least young adults, and that neither series is considered to be of literary merit, I do not understand the relevance of your question. I hope I completed your task as well as you'd wanted me to.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Chauncy Pickles): I was obviously speaking figuratively when I said the two were incomparable.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Darling, I believe you've mistaken "figuratively" for "mistakenly". Quite ironic, if I do say so myself.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Chauncy Pickles): "How can you compare these two series?" Literal meaning: It is impossible to compare these two series. Figurative meaning: You should not compare these two series, because one is in a totally different league than the other.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So they aren't DIRECTLY comparable, by your standards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Chauncy Pickles): This conversation is going nowhere. You clearly understand what I'm trying to say.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Chauncy Pickles is right about what I meant. According to the post, the only reason why Harry Potter is better than other series is because of its foreshadowiung of events that we don't notice the first time. But I was stating that it's not the only series to do this so this is not a good reason to claim that these are the best books to reread.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Our comments' cumulative score is greater than the score of the initial comment, if that means anything to you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In Order of Phoenix I remember a brief moment where Harry was cleaning and came upon the locket which would be so important in Deathly Hallows, and in Half-Blood Prince when he passed the bust with the diadem on it while trying to find a hiding place for the diary. It gives me a headache thinking of how long it took J.K. Rowling to plan all these things out.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, I loved that. I remember going back to the 6th book and looking for the specific reference to the diadem after reading the 7th. Also, I really enjoyed how Harry destroyed the diary. Like, we didn't even care about things like horcruxes or saving the world at that point, it was just like "wow, some crazy shit is going down at Hogwarts." But then he reaches over, grabs a basilisk tusk, and destroys the fucking horcrux! Then we learn that it's maybe 1 of 4 ways to destroy one, and I was just like FUCK HOW COMPLETELY PERFECT IS THAT, HE CONVENIENTLY WAS NEXT TO ONE OF ONLY A FEW WAYS TO KILL VOLDEMORT! I'm not trying to belittle the book in any way, I love it, but Harry was pretty goddamn lucky.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also, it always bothered me that Tom chose to hide the diadem in the Room of Requirement. Did he really think that it was such a good spot and that he was the only person who could find it? Like the room was only meant for him? He's a pretty smart wizard, I don't think we would have made a dumb assumption like that. And now I'm done with my rant. (whoops, forgot to go anon for a sec there)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You have to remember that he didn't imagine anyone would ever find out he made Horcruxes, and that if they did, they would never imagine he made more than one. Also, no one specifically knew they were looking for a diadem, and there's billions of items in the Room of Requirement - all things considered, it would have seemed like a safe place.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Simon) Then your explanation is much more effective than Harry's. I brought out the 'ole Deathly Hallows to quote some of his reasoning about why Riddle hid it in the Room of Requirement. "He knew, at last, where the Horcrux sat waiting for him... Tom Riddle, who confided in no one and operated alone, might have been arrogant enough to assume that he, and only he, had penetrated the deepest mysteries of Hogwarts Castle..." (620) "'And he never realized anyone could get in?' said Ron, his voice echoing in the silence. 'He thought he was the only one,' said Harry. 'Too bad for him I've had to hide stuff in my time...'" (627)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol, break out the ol' quotes, aye? But, yeah, I guess Voldemort's own ego played a part - the fact that he thought his intelligence superior to anyone else's caused him to underestimate everyone.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

When I reread Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince, I noticed that there are a bunch of references to the barman at the Hog's Head. Brilliant.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I haven't read a single Harry Potter book, and I don't plan to. I respect the people who can give their opinions, but most of the fans are like "OMG you disgrace how can you not read it?!!?", and that's annoying.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not to be "one of those people" but why not? Is it because you don't like that style or couldn't get into it or are you doing it because you don't like obnoxious fans? Because the fans really don't affect how good or bad the books are.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes they do. I'll never read another one of those books because of the stupid fans who act like Harry Potter books are the greatest in history. They're not even top 10. Or 20, or 30, or 40. Not even in the top 100. They are good and I've read them all, but seriously people, find something else to obsess about.

Fellow PotHeads unite!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

OMG I love the Percy Jackson and the Olymian Series!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What did you gain from writing that? It's so irrelevant to the post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I hope you know the post is about Harry Potter books, and so my comment is relevant. I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to post my comments and opinions. *crawls back into corner*

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand if you just couldn't get into them, but if its just because you hate how some people obsess over them then you really ought to disregard that and give them a chance. it really is brilliant writing.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

@1260457 (Sandrine): @1260469 (BeedleTheBard): I just never felt like really reading the series, tbh. It has/had nothing to do with the fans.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

hm. well I'm sure tons of people have tried to convince you of it, so I won't try. :P

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That was me about eight months ago. I hated those books with all of my life (something I'm embarassed to say now) because of all of the unruly fans and crazy press. I was content choosing my own books and not being persuaded by everyone else. But one of my friends came along and was like "Dude. Just give it a chance." So I borrowed the first one from my other friend. The first line had me hooked. I honestly don't have a word in my vocabulary to describe the series, and I'm not exagarrating. Just give them a chance, you won't regret it. Trust me, I know, because less than a year ago i was in your shoes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"The first line had me hooked" "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense." Seriously...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

C'mon mate. We just wanna be a bunch of nerdy fans here, you don't need to point out every occurance of it. :P

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand that you really fucking hate Harry Potter fans, but I don't see why you're putting down people who are simply just discussing some cool things in the book.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, yeah, seriously. I specifically remember reading the first line of the Philosopher's Stone and knowing I was in for something good. That was not sarcastic in any context. I was completely aware that was the first line in the series and I think it's great. It's the author's job to hook the reader in right away, and J.K. Rowling managed to do that with the first sentence. Also, you didn't need to quote her, because I know that line by heart :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's absolutely nothing of any significance in the first line.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm completely aware of that.. I just love the way it was written, is that seriously such a problem for you?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes and I cut myself because of it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

dude.. just shut up

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Fans like that annoy me and make obsessive but respectful fans like most of us look bad. I mean, it makes me a tiny bit upset when I meet someone who hasn't read them because I think that they're really great books, but it's not like you're a horrible person for not reading them. Fantasy isn't the genre for everyone, and I can respect that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well thanks for spoiling it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Deathly Hallows came out in 2007, after 4 years they're no longer "spoilers" - you've had enough time to read the books.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Seriously? It came out in 2007? That makes me feel old...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I remember waiting for the fourth book to come out. :/

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't remember that, but I definitely remember going to the midnight premier parties for at least the last two.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I was at school when Goblet of Fire came out, and school started at 9AM, and the bookstore opened at 10AM so I had to wait til after school to get it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I remember being at the midnight parties, and I was only 9 or 10... Geez, I was really young to be reading the last couple of books!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Umm no one asked you to share your life story about where you were when the book came out. Just because it came out in 2007 doesn't mean you get to dictate ifna person should have read a boom or not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Umm, rude much? I wasn't the one who said "you've had enough time to read the books"- although you definitely have. I don't even understand your comment. I'm allowed to share my opinion, am I not?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And I'm pretty sure making 3 comments isn't "sharing my life story," thanks very much.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Apparently, in GoF, when Harry is explaining to Dumbledore and Sirius that Voldemort took his blood, Dumbledore gets "A spark of triumph in his eye", or something like that, since it means it will protect him on the future. That part was incredible to me when I found it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow. I really didn't make that connection. I always thought Dumbledore was proud of Tom. I was just like, "What the hell, Dumbledore?"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Thank you!!! I delved into 80+ comments in the hope that somebody would adress that! SpellCheck, I don't know you, but I think I love you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh, and in CoS, Nearly Headless Nick smashes a Vanishing Closet to distract Filch from Harry. Then in HBP, Draco encounters trouble with one of the Closets - I think Montague got stuck in it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This comment and all of the others make me think that I'll never know EVERYTHING there is to know about HP.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

OMG found this on MuggleNet: In St. Mungo’s, when they are going to visit Mr. Weasley- 'They climbed a flight of stairs and entered the "Creature-Induced Injuries" corridor, where the second door on the right bore the words 'DANGEROUS' DAI LLEWELLYN WARD: SERIOUS BITES.' If you put these words on a sign, they would read: Creature-Induced Injuries Dangerous Dai Llewellyn Ward Serious Bites Take the first word of each of these and what do you get get? Creature Dangerous Dai Serious? No - Kreacher dangerous, Die Sirius...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow. :/ That all sounds too complicated to have been really intentional, but you never know. There seems to have been *a lot* of foreshadowing in various places. :O

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow! 0.0. Love it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also, this is another long shot, but in the first book, Draco tries to make a joke about how a wide-mouthed frog will replace Harry on the Quidditch team. In the 5th book, Umbridge, who is described as looking like a toad, replaces him ... with Ginny. Bit of a stretch, I know, but still.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

SPOILER! I'm only halfway through Chamber of Secrets... For the second time, anyway haha. I'm re-reading them all and going to have a movie marathon before watching the last film.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In HBP after Ron gets poisoned, Hagrid and Harry are talking in the corridor. Hagrid says he heard Snape and Dumbledore arguing by the lake, that Snape said something about not wanting to do it anymore. That was one of the memories in the DH chapter "A Prince's Tale."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"Snape and Dumbledore arguing by the lake, that Snape said something about not wanting to do it anymore" hellohellohello

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ahahahaha you're the best, dude.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

[from Mugglenet] On page 167 of the US edition: "Well, there's one good thing," he said savagely. "Snape'll be gone by the end of the year." "What do you mean?" asked Ron. "That job's jinxed. No one's lasted more than a year .... Quirrell actually died doing it.... Personally, I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for another death...." As it turns out, it was a death that got Snape out of the job for next year (presumably, anyway)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(This is a major spoiler for those who haven't read the books) In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow, George losing his ear foreshadows a death... I won't say who though only that it foreshadows it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

shit I wrote the wrong name haha. I meant it's Fred who dies for all you lazy fucks that haven't read the books yet. Made me so sad. Even the movie scene where George loses his ear & Fred's reaction broke my heart (cry2)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh my God I was wicked close to tears :( Everytime I read the book I just cry... like waterfalls coming from my eyes :'( Fred and George are my favorite characters and losing one of them just sucks </3

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh I'm sorry I didn't know I wasn't allowed to state my opinion.....

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You are. And as far as I was aware, I'm perfectly within my rights to tell you that your opinion sucks. Even though you never stated an opinion in the first place. Seriously? Do people like you just say stuff like 'quit trashin my opinion!!1@!' without even knowing what you're saying. Get off the internet, or at least Amirite, and become an original, somewhat intelligent human being.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm sorry you haven't had the chance to be passionate about a book, Panda. :(

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I loved Harry Potter when I was younger. To this day I've never liked a book as much as I liked Harry Potter. But, when I finished reading the books, I moved on. I admit, I've made attempts to read it again so that I could join the crowd (I even made it to book 5 once) but then, eventually, I realized that it was a huge waste of time. The books aren't even that amazing. What really pisses me off is that everywhere I look, people are still talking about Harry Potter like they just read it yesterday for the first time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know, and it's completely fine if you feel that way. But for some people, it's truly something they love, and you can't bash them for that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes I can, and if you think about it, loving an inanimate object is a waste of time. And wtf do you mean by "I know"? Did you completely anticipate that story or something?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

no I anticipated you'd have your own opinion, whether that be you liked it or hated it. It's not an inanimate object, it's a story. Whatever.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Uhm, some people probably did read it yesterday for the first time. Also, because of the movies, it's been an ongoing thing for many years. So obviously people will be talking about it. The last movie is the end of an era and important to some people. Also, I don't believe that enjoying a story is a waste of time. I think that it's the little enjoyments that make day-to-day life worth smiling about. It may be a waste of time for you to read a story, but it isn't for other people. So you can bash all the opinions you want, but you're still not right. Nobody is. We've all got things we love and you (or anyone else) can't call it a waste of time. It's our time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Was that actually necessary? Obviously you give some fucks or else you wouldn't have commented to begin with.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

also it was tl;dr

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Again, why comment at all if you're just going to ignore the replies? Seems like a waste of time to me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Seriously why are we all fighting? We are all allowed to state our own opinions and though some may be hurtful we need to move on.. That's the joys of books...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sorry....? I really don't want to fight cuz I don't even know you but if it makes you feel better I'll shut up...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You've made valid points, you shouldn't apologize for that just because someone is grumpy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

C'mon Philly_Panda, if you don't want to encounter a bunch of Potter fans, there's plenty of other posts that aren't discussing the books in the comments.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I used to think you were funny, but I have lost all my respect for you. I don't really care if you hate Harry Potter, and you do have the right to express your opinion, but you've taken it too far. Not liking a series doesn't give you the right to be a complete and total dick to everyone who does and wants to discuss it in a mature way. Please find something better to do with your time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(Feathers of Hope): I don't even know who you are, so I don't care at all.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Dude.. if you didn't care, you wouldn't continue to reply. You need to accept that some people care about something, and accept that there's nothing you can do about it, so why are you even trying namelessly over the internet? And please stop trying to act superior to everybody, because if you haven't noticed, your comments habe an extreme case of negative voting. I think it's great that you have your own opinion. I don't agree with your opinion, but yours is just as valid as anyone else's because it's how you feel. I'm not going to try to change that. But if you tell someone that their opinion is wrong, what gives you the right to voice yours? You need to realize that there's diversity in opinions, and you need to embrace that as a blessing and not a curse. If everything was the same, the world would suck. So please understand that no matter how much you tell us to stop liking Harry Potter, we'll continue to love it. And no matter how much we tell you to start liking it, you won't....

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In part 2 though, I was a little surprised during the movie when Fred's death was BARELY drawn out! I had my kleenex ready to go but they didn't even really show when he actually died. Although I must admit that when they showed his body near the end, the tears started coming.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Y'all should get into some grown up fiction and read the wheel of time books. Also Snape kills Dumbledore.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm pretty sure most of the fans already know what happens from reading the books. Spoiler fail.
