Well, part of crap like that is because the person sees themselves badly when they shouldn't and has no confidence. But society does influence some actions, I mean, if it were more socially acceptable for people to be fat, there would be less anorexia. Although most people starve themselves because they think they're fat, not others. People can take extreme measures against the way they look even if they're constantly complimented.
