Its called thinking. You have an idea and you go through what could go wrong. Like pretending to be smart and trying to correct somebody on grammar and failing. You could have thought that through.

No, but it still doesn't make sense. It would, if it were "You THOUGHT this would be, but then you REALIZED that..." or at least "You THINK this would be, but then you REALIZE that...". The tense needs to be consistent throughout.
