And yet every. single. fucking. sitcom has that episode where one of the characters tries desperately to get someone with a crush on them to hate them to no avail.

Are you kidding? It really depends on the person. Some people are happy all the functioning time and no shift will ever get them down. Some people just hate everyone. Now, if you can get the former to hate you and the latter to like you, then you are amazing.
