It seems simple to me, that if you believe in evolution, Neanderthals began making different sounds for different things, like animals in the way they growl at each other or have mating calls. Eventually, as humans became more complex, they made more complex and different sounds for a variety of things, thus creating words.

And the written word evolved the same way, from pictures of things, to symbols representing things, to symbols representing sounds.
