You're not entirely sure what the American Dream is. amirite?

Isn't it to own a car?
by Anonymous12 years ago
I don't think so. People have been taking about the AMerican Dream even before cars became popular.

Then I think it's to own a house. One of those things. Haha you were right nobody knows for sure

@1320001 (fangirl12): It's mainly to own a house, but it also signifies happiness and freedom. We had to read Of Mice And Men for English and we had to analyze that haha.

A car in every driveway, a chicken in every pot, a large home, a nice family, and cocaine?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Constant happiness and the illusion that everything is perfect, there's enough of everything for everyone, and there's nobody left around to point out otherwise.

Isn't it what that #fatass wrestler used to call himself
by Anonymous12 years ago
Actually, I always thought that it was to build yourself up from nothing to rich and successful...
by Anonymous12 years ago
I always tought it was to get rich from scratch & own your own car and your own house
by Anonymous12 years ago

sleep, eat, and have sex....and to be free with your own home yadda yadda yadda.

Yep. Had to read Death of a Salesman and The Great Gatsby. The American Dream is the pursuit of success and happiness.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I read The Great Gatsby and I still didn't get what the American Dream was supposed to be. Didn't help that I didn't care about the book and our teacher emphasized literary elements, not ever explaining what the American Dream was.

*SPOILERS*
Well, I didn't exactly 'read' The Great Gatsby, but I got %100 on the test at the end of the term. But Jay Gatsby was infatuated with the American Dream. He was born in a lower class society as Jay Gatz, but he dreamt of being upperclass and created his 'Jay Gatsby' persona. He did some mildly illegal bond-selling and made a fortune. Except his American Dream was missing a love-interest, aka Daisy Buchanan. Daisy was unattainable though, so Gatsby's American Dream failed.

but he didn't actually care about the money, he just did that stuff to impress Daisy. The money and possessions were just extra, he didn't really care about them.
by Anonymous12 years ago
But the only reason he was attracted to daisy was because she embodied the American dream. Rich, beautiful, happy, and especially rich. He claimed it was love but if you analyze it enough, he was really just in love with what daisy symbolized.

The corner house with a white picket fence, 2.5 kids, creating your own success, happiness, money, and a "perfect" life. In a nut-shell ;)
