whats the difference between that and racing horses?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, the buses can do a lot more damage in crashes.

I don't think it should be stopped. I think the rules and regulations should be better enforced.

Why is it a bad thing? ( Just wondering.)

A lot of the dogs are kept in poor condition, only having human interaction when they're trained. Some are given drugs to enhance racing performance, and there are several cruel training methods, like whipping. I met a retired racing greyhound once. His owner had no use for him anymore so he dumped at a shelter the day after his final race. The man said the dog didn't have a name, just the number tattooed on his ear like many racing greyhounds. That was that dog's identity on his ear: 453. The same as the 452 in that racing league before him.

Oh my :( That made my heart hurt a little. In this case, I think it should be ban too. Why hasn't PETA jumped all over that? Is that not their job?

Horse racing too.

All forms of animal racing should be more strictly monitored, but not banned. I've been to a few amateur races, and at all of them the dogs were friendly and well-treated.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

do you mean those dogs?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They may have been well-treated at the races, but they're not treated well otherwise. They live in crates too small for them for almost the entire day only taken out for training and races. They're fed poorly if at all. Diseases run wild in the places they're kept. They have no interaction with people other than when they're trained. Many are abused by those people. Plus when they're deemed unfit for racing between 2 and 4 many are put down when they could live a happy live with a family. Puppies are also put down if it doesn't seem like they'll be a good racer before they even have a chance at life. The puppies that do make it to adulthood don't have their "puppyhood."

I forgot to add that when they're "put down" that usually doesn't even mean humanely. Some are beaten and left to die, many are shot. Many have their ears cut off so the owners can't be IDed easily. There was one newspaper article that I read a few years back that sticks out in my mind. A greyhound had it's ears cut off, was shot in the head, bruises from being beaten and it's jaw was completely broken and dislocated. This dog was just left somewhere, the owner believed the dog was dead. The dog was not however and had to suffer through that pain before being humanely euthanized.

That poor dog. It pisses me off when people treat animals like that.
