It's not right that atheists can't legally hold public office in some states, amirite?

And in the states that they can hold office, many people won't vote for them solely because they are an atheist.

None of these laws are actually used in practice anymore. Some of them might still be written in the books but if someone were to challenge the law it would be taken to the state or supreme court and removed. That's how US laws work - many of them are unconstitutional, but until someone bothers to challenge them they remain.
