+339 School should teach kids that there is more than one way to solve a math problem. amirite?

My highschool enforces it b/c everyone learns differently.

I wish mine did. I stopped doing homework, because I always got 0's because it was never the way the prof wanted.

our school insists on wasting time teaching as many methods as possible, i'd really prefer if they taught it one way and let us research our own ways if we wanted.

you YYA'd...

Because i agree that we should be able to solve an equation however we want, i'm just pointing out some of the problems.

And what if not everyone is intelligent enough to decipher the different ways? Or is too afraid that it's not right?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well then they stick to the way they understand...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, but if they don't know there's another way, they won't do it for fear of getting marked down. And how would they know how to do it a different way if it was only taught one way?

i have agreed to the post i'm just saying that it is annoying!

You're being hypocritical. People should use their own method, but not know how? DO you realize how idiotic that sounds?

people should find their own method by themselves and use it. School should teach us that there are other ways of solving the problem, but not actually give us it because for the great majority of people the method taught is enough, for the those struggling or excelling other methods might be better but it's their responsibly to find them and use them, if need be they can ask the teacher for help with the other method. But teaching a class 4 different ways to do the exact same thing is just unnecessary. It confuses the less intelligent and bores the more intelligent.

I agree, but truthfully if both methods works everytime, then, when you analyze what happens, the methods are the same. "Other ways" are really just different ways of thinking about a single method.

And teach the other ways. Not just be like "Oh, and you can do it differently, too. Moving on.."

My school does that but it can be annoying. Like, a lot of the time they teach the long way first, then they teach us the easy way. I'm not sure why but the teachers seem to think it's a great idea. Then my teacher last year would work out problems in front of the class a lot and have students come up. Basically the entire class would end up doing it all one way or else it was harder to understand. It always felt like they picked the way that I didn't understand as much. So, it has it's pros and cons.
