+264 So the government says that the Westboro baptist church has the right to protest military funerals and homosexuality, but homosexuals don't have the right to get married? Which one is worse, really? amirite?

You know what would make this post better? A justin bieber joke. I bet you still have a few seconds left... go ahead, add it.

STFU cunt

By the way, isn't the term "cunt" derogatory towards women? Shame, shame... tolerant towards homosexuals but not towards women. You really shouldn't pick and choose like that.

I agree, WBC is definitely worse. But, freedom of speech is guaranteed in the Constitution, so you can say whatever you want, regardless of its hateful and malicious manner.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, laws surrounding freedom of speech and laws surrounding marriage aren't really comparable. And, like, obviously I think the WBC are douches - they're pretty much IRL trolls, but it's gotta hurt families and friends when they're at funerals, but taking about the right to protest is a slippery slope - if you allow the government to silence WBC, then who else are they allowed to silence? Like, you can't say groups that you don't like, like WBC, are allowed to be silenced, and then say groups that you do support aren't.

I mean, that's like a republican wanting a democrat's right to express their opinion taken away, because they disagree. WBC definitely should have their freedoms taken away, by our basic moral code, but America is the land of the free.

Yeah, I agree - basically, you can't say X group should be allowed to protest and Y group shouldn't - if you support the right to protest and freedom of speech, you have to allow it for all non-violent groups. Still think it's shitty, though, because this isn't even about the gay thing any more - I can handle people calling me a fag and telling me I'm going to hell, I've heard it all my life. It's the fact that they're targeting dead individuals' funerals at a highly stressful time for their families, which shows a complete lack of human emotion.

One thing the US is very proud of is the military. It shocks me the government lets them protest MILITARY funerals, 1st Amendment rights or not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They're really fucking slippery, the WBC. They aren't allowed to protest in the actual funeral, but they protest on the street outside it. And if it's non-violent, you can't really stop them from being on the streets.

I hate loopholes in the legal system.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Solution: schedule fire fighters to clean the streets and sidewalks with high powered water hoses during the funerals.

Gay marriage is legal in some states and gainging popularity. Gay marriage, however, will never be allowed in the Church (any Church) because marriage is inherently an institution sacred to one man and one woman. Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and peaceful protest is allowed anywhere, regardless of religion. So you can't really compare the two...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree. Some churches already bless homosexual partnerships, and with the growing tolerance of homosexuality, it shouldn't be long before some will perform a marriage for two homosexual partners.

WBC is a disgraceful group of people. They came and protested at my university at the start of our pride week (and at about 6 local high schools) and the students at my uni. scheduled a counter protest by making a circle around them and holding up signs of love. They also got a donor to make a donation of whatever amount to the GSA for every minute the WBC group was there. Needless to say, they did not stay as long as intended. WBC is lead by a lawyer who waits for someone to get violent against them and then files a lawsuit to gain money, that's how they get money to travel. Also, look up the Patriot Guard Riders, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Guard_Riders , heros IMHO Anyway, first ammendment rights (or any rights for that matter) end when you start impeding on someone elses rights, and I believe that they are most DEFINATELY impeding on both the deceased soldiers right and the families and friends right to have that final moment to say goodbye and to move on in peace

Recently a police officer was killed while on duty and the WBC protested his funeral. I was horrified. What douchebags.
