-97 It takes 100 similar people for a stereotype to start, but just one different person for the stereotype to end. amirite?

Not really. I'm black. I hate watermelon. I know who my dad is. I don't eat fried chicken more than normal. I get straight A's. I am currently number 2 in my class. I like rock music. My name is not Shaniqua. My name is Samantha. Actually, everyone in my family has "normal names." I don't whore around. I have no STDs. I don't use ebonics. I have never worn any type of fake hair, ever. There are plenty of people who don't fit the stereotype, but once they are noticed, others accuse them of acting white (in my case) or being fake.

>(White) Kid in my class asks (Black) me if I prefer McDonalds or KFC. >Tell him I hate both. >He makes me choose anyway. >I choose McDonalds, because I can at least tolerate some of their food. >Kid hugs me and tells his (White) friend "he's one of us!"

by Anonymous 12 years ago

See, stuff like that is ridiculous and it makes me angry. Just because I don't fit what others think I should fit, they accuse me of being something I'm not. They don't use me as an example against stereotyping, but instead consider me some type of random outlier that shouldn't exist.

Hating stereotypes as much as I do makes me hate myself for the few that do apply to me. I pride myself on defying so many, but I do like watermelon (along with all fruit), I just met my father (hardly my fault), and I do have a large penis ( hello ).

If the stereotype ever existed, some people will mention it facetiously, but then all black people will get paranoid that everyone is racist, but the truth is, not everyone's from Alabama. And you're racist against white people.

How many times are you going to subtly troll and change your name?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Fuck, I thought that was Chauncy until I saw this comment. ono

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nope, Chauncy isn't a douche.

I live in a mainly aboriginal town and I've been told I'm racist simply because I'm white (yeah, it doesn't make sense). A common term where I'm from is "apple" (red on the outside and white on the inside), applied to native kids who do well in school and don't drink. I think it's stupid to think that being smart is a "white" thing. I think we should all be proud of who we are as long as we're good people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've heard that before. Asians are "twinkies" and I'm an "oreo", apparently. But yeah, if me being smart pisses them off, then they can go to hell. But you're being sterotyped for no earthly reason.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think the terms are stupid, it's almost like racism towards yourself (suggesting that you can only be smart or whatever if you're not black, or native, or whatever). It's just stupid and has no basis in reality.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's what get's me about minorities sometimes. I mean, jeeze, when did being a dumbass start carrying good connotations? But then again, like Shorkians example above, sometimes it's still believed by both. I can't count how many times I've been claimed white by white people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think that's silly. I was once called a "racist white bitch," wrap your head around that. Stereotypes are everywhere and they're 99% stupid (I'm assuming there are *some* stereotypes that might be positive and even somewhat true).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

By the natives? Holy cow.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, it's weird. In my town there are sorta two different groups (the stereotypical drunks and the "apples"). There are a few specific drunken regulars who are terribly racist. It hard to blame some of them though, with the public schools thing. However, I believe there comes a time when you make a choice and have to stop blaming everyone else for your problems.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree 100%. Usually if people would put forth the same amount of effort they do when complaining, they could get out of the situation they're in.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No kidding! Plus our government throws out sooo much money, and it's not helping at all, but they don't care because they get back 90% of it via slot machines and booze. It's just a mess with no foreseable solution.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

>White >Don't know my dad >Love chicken >Get's in fights all the time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm pretty sure you've got the numbers backwards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You couldn't be further from the truth.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Really? Because most is not all stereotypes are wrong, yet people continue to believe in them. Yet when you show specific examples of it being the opposite, people don't wanna believe it. It takes one ignorant person to create a stereotype and all of society to finally say, no, it's not true. Though I know they were talking about the people the stereotype is directed toward.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People joke about them, but don't believe in them. Since you're black, you're just paranoid that everyone's racist. That's the only stereotype people believe. There's also Asians being smart, but that's justified and the only bad thing about it is some people might have high expectations hiring an Asian employee. There are very few actual racists out there (although everyone has a bit of bias inside them to a degree).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not black, I'm white. But there ARE people out there who believe in stereotypes. Truly. I've seen it. There are racists out there. Anyone who expects another race to be a certain way, is racist. And you are definitely racist, if you think any stereotype is justified.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well Asians being smart is just an expectation people have, because they have strict parents so kids do well in school. So that one is historically backed up. Do I believe in that? No. Is it okay to? No. Did I word it wrong up there? Yes. And I have already said that people like that exist. You're just trying to sound as smart as you can. The thing is that the majority of people aren't racist, although everyone has a bit of bias in them, unless they made a conscious effort to get rid of it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Stereotypes won't be defied by one person to whom it doesn't apply, you may need another hundred people to convince yourself that you were wrong before

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think you got it the other way around. One muslim was a terrorist and now some people think Muslims are terrorists. And even if like over a hundred Muslims participated in the crime, I'M A NICE MUSLIM WHO DOESNT CARE ABOUT RELIGION, DOES THAT STOP THE STEREO TYPE?
