+172 Political advertisements shouldn't be legal. All they do is prove who has more popularity and money. Instead, the government could sponsor/run a website that provides information the on the candidates' views. amirite?

Freedom of speech. Arguement is invalid.

It's illegal to advertise cigarettes on TV, controlling what people are exposed to isn't necessarily against the Freedom of Speech.

A government run website discussing candidates views, that would go over well and in no way become corrupt/biased

Or each party could have their own website. Since they would all be biased it would even out a bit. It seems that candidates commercials just say why they shouldn't pick the other party and not why they should be picked. Rarely do they ever discuss any issues. (I'm Canadian, so I'm not sure what the US commercials consist of.)

Actually I like that idea better. US political commercial are mostly candidates pointing out things that other candidates are doing wrong.

If every party had their own website, there'd be no point in taking the commercials off television. You can change the channel if you don't like the candidate being advertised. The only people who should be bothered by political advertisements are those who are not confident enough in their own political ideology and are easily swayed.

I don't know about you, but I don't watch TV for the commercials, I'm not going to change the channel because I don't like the commercial. Also, political advertisements are all over TV anyways. And currently, the "political ideology" in the US consists almost entirely of two systems.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Right, but if you're confident enough in whatever you think is correct, within those two systems, then you shouldn't be swayed so easily by advertisements. You say you don't watch TV for the commercials, so how would a political advertisement on there effect you any differently than any other commercial?

The point would be to have easily accessible information to what each political party stands for and what plans they would have once they won, among other things. The websites could benefit the public unlike commercials. So there would be less questions about what each party has to offer and voters could make informed votes. Commercials are annoying because they offer no insight and are ultimately a waste of time and no one wants to see someone they are cheering for being bashed with unfounded accusations. It's not lethal, but few people really enjoy watching annoying commercials of any kind, including the political variety.
