+352 When you say "what?" you could either mean you didn't hear somebody and you want them to repeat it or you didn't understand and you want them to elaborate. You give no way for them to tell which one you meant, but it's really annoying if they think you meant the other one, amirite?

"No I heard you god dammit, but what the hell do you mean?!"

Happens to me all the time

I still say "what?" even if I heard them AND understand what they mean. It gives me those valuable extra seconds to think of a better/funnier response.

Its even worse when you hear someone say "Hey! gghjxdxhcjj fhgh with a dog!" and you say "what" and they say "with a dog...you know, man's best friend, four legged animal, furry, cute?" and they look at you like you're stupid when you still don't get it because they elaborated/repeated the wrong part of the sentence.

This general situation is basically what inspired this post. My mom always starts talking to me from really far away in the house and finishes her sentence right next to me, and when I say "what?" she repeats the end or continues on, and it's like no, I didn't hear the beginning when you were upstairs.
