+151 Musicians: When you are reasonably proficient with a certain instrument, it can be rather frustrating to have to start at the beginner level when you try to learn a new one, amirite?

Yes! Saxophone...then flute /:

That's what I'm trying to learn! Is the flute very different than the saxophone? I can play piano, but the flute is so strange in comparison.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How you blow into the flute is very different, but the fingerings are actually extremely similar!

Ah, that's helpful. Since I don't have any prior experience with woodwinds, I'm finding it rather difficult. Although, the worst part is I get dizzy, so I really need to work on that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I get dizzy too! /: it's frustrating

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Dizziness goes away y I'm somewhat the opposite; flute was my first instrument, and now I'd love to learn saxophone. Or piano, for that matter. Maybe violin...

Bill Clinton plays sax hw seemed cool with that. Hope it works out well for you.

Going from flute to saxophon I feel would be extremely easy, try it! Well that's just my opinion with my experince with both instruments.

I sing classically, but my voice teacher wanted to try musical theater. I can sing classical-sounding musical theater, but this was the kind where you have to belt or sound belt-y. It was very frustrating because I had to learn to redirect my voice to different areas and breathe a little differently, just like when I first started classical. I still haven't gotten the hang of it :(

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm the exact opposite! I started singing musical theatre and stuff, and I was used to belting out high notes, and my voice teacher wanted me to sing a lied. It was the biggest failure ever.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I wish we could trade voices for a while :)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wow, funny. I like lieder, (was it Schubert?), but when it comes to musical theater, I can only sing styles like Phantom or West Side Story. I wish I could belt, but I sing really lyrical and high stuff all the time, so it was hard. Maybe if I had stuck with it, i would have gotten it, but I felt it was interfering with my usual technique.

actually, its gives you a lot of transferable knowledge about music in general. and dexterity, which makes u move through beginnerland way faster ^.^ for example Ive been playing guitar for 3 years, and when i first picked up a ukulele, I already could play a bunch of complicated fingerstyle songs in like a day :P

Yeah, I went piano(though I never was that good) to trumpet, which I got good at and still play. Now I'm learning guitar and it's hard to imagine something less helpful than knowing trumpet to help with that. I'm so impatient!

Especially when the music is in a different clef. I'm a longtime viola player and it's really difficult to play another instrument, because the music is so often treble.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I love the viola! It has such a rich, beautiful sound. It's also not quite as popular a choice of instrument, which I consider a plus :)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I wholeheartedly agree. What do you play?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh never mind, I just read the rest of your comments and now I feel stupid.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Haha no problem. I just play piano now, but I took violin for a short time when I was a child. I've always loved the sound of string instruments and I wish I had stayed with it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The piano is very cool, though. I wish I had started with the piano, because I think everything else would be a little easier to learn. I've tried to learn a bit, but I'm atrocious.

I've played clarinet for over four years, now switching to oboe. They're similar enough to make it easy to get confused, and different enough to make that confusion a disaster, plus they're in different keys.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm going through this right now! I've played piano for 11 years & now I'm learning the drums. it's sooo frustrating >.<

Same thing with learning a new language. Once I'd mastered Mandarin I moved on to Korean, and it's annoying being down in the know-nothing stage again

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It helps if you stay in the same family like from trumpet to tuba or clarinet to saxophone since they have similar embouchures but since I play flute it's gonna suck for me learning anything besides piccolo alto flute or bass flute. If I could go back to playing violin I would love to but I haven't played one in 9 years

It is nice to have a head start on any learning.
