+296 Kindles take the fun out of everything about books, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How? I use my Kindle for reading most of the time nowadays and it's not any less fun. I'd even argue that it's more fun.

It takes the fun out of going to a bookstore, flipping a page, and book marking a page yourself. And the only presentable argument that the commercial has is a blank stare at you.

Since when is going to a bookstore, flipping pages, and bookmarkings pages "fun"? I suppose going to bookstores can be fun, but if I know I need to buy a specific book, it saves a hell of a lot of time to just download it in 60 seconds without having to go anywhere. Flipping pages is not a fun thing either, it's a task. Think about how terribly uncomfortable it is when your book is 400 pages or more and you constantly have to worry about the book flipping itself closed when you're reading the first or last 20%. The Kindle method of turning pages is no less fun, and I'd call the iPhone/iPad method of turning pages very fun. On a Kindle, you can still bookmark pages, and I frequently do so when I see a page I like. And I can do this without putting in earmarks that damage any pages. And while if I'm reading a physical book, I might forget a bookmark, the Kindle will automatically save my page, meaning I don't have to worry about finding it again later. How is that less fun? And I have no idea what you mean by "commercial". The Kindle is also more fun in other ways than physical books. It allows me to look up any word instantly without having to flip through a dictionary. I can ad...

I can add bookmarks, highlights, and notes wherever I want. It's lighter and thinner than most any physical book, making it easier to read from. It holds all the books I could ever own, meaning I don't have to carry around their weight and I only have to keep track of one thing, the Kindle. Books on Kindle are usually significantly cheaper than in physical form. I can download the first chapter from most any book I want to sample it. I can change the font size to my liking. I would call all of that pretty fucking fun compared to the experience you'd get with a book. I think most people like books only because they've been around longer and they're trying to make an anti-technology statement. I find this confusing because people embrace MP3 players in such large numbers, which is basically the same concept but for music. I think most any human being living from the years 1400-1950 would have loved to have a reading device as convenient and useful as a Kindle. Only nowadays would people seriously disapprove of their use. Let's stop pretending that "turning pages" and "putting in bookmarks" and "smelling pages" (yes, I've literally heard someone say that) is such a fun, integral

part of reading and realize that ereaders are a great way to read the same damn material you could get in a physical book.

Why don't you just marry your kindle?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think it's ethical to marry anything or anybody until gays have equal marriage rights.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

books aren't fun anyway

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You know, I would've guessed people enjoy books for the words and sentences and paragraphs and chapters. Guess not, looks like I've been doing it wrong this whole time.

What else is there to a book besides the words that make it so important...?

The smell, the feeling of going into a bookshop and walking through the shelves, picking some up, having a look, having them all lined up on your bookshelf, the texture of the paper when you're actually able to TURN the page: you can't have that with a kindle. Plus paper doesn't run out of battery. Kindles suck balls, this post is so right, I wish I could Yeah You Are! it more than once. x

you could not have said it more perfectly

haha thanks :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I mean just the victory of buying a book, turning a page, and bookmarking pages is the most overcoming feeling in the world.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not to mention closing it when you're done.... such a great feeling <3

looking at the last page OH MY GOD YES!

With books, you can have an awesome book collection on an awesome book shelf. Books also don't require batteries, are stronger and more durable than Kindles, usually cheaper, don't have any type of storage limit, AND can be used as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or Home plate during a baseball game.

I don't read to have a bookshelf full of books. I don't read for the smell or the bookstore "feel" (the smell of the bookstore gives me the shits anyway.) I don't read to have something to sit on. I read for the content of the book. It makes no difference to me whether I read "Curiosity is gluttony. To see is to devour." on paper or on my phone (I use the Kindle app for Android.) Quote by Victor Hugo.

Libraries, what about libraries? You step inside and feel the quiet, the only noise your soft footsteps on the carpet and the background hum of polite whispered conversation. Dust motes float in silent beams of light as you run your fingers along the shelves, selecting at random a yellowed and out-of-print book you've never heard of before. The cover art is striking and you flip to the first page. As you begin to read you hear the voice of the author beginning to tell his story, a story no one has listened to for years. You're hooked. You've discovered a treasure, a book long forgotten and certainly not available in any online library, nor brought up by any search engine. It's a quiet, everyday kind of magic. And Kindles and Nooks are surprisingly heavy.

I prefer actual books because I can lend them to my friends. If I had a kindle, I couldn't just let them have it for however long it takes them to read it. And I love sharing books with my friends. :)

If you meet your favorite author, would you get your kindle signed? I mean...it's not the same.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Mmmmh, the cracking of the spine when you open it for the first time.

On the one hand, paper books are nice, and there's something special about bookstores. On the other hand, my nook lets me carry my whole library in a pound-and-a-half of book. Which is very nice since I like doorstopper fantasy books :P And just because you have a nook, doesn't mean you can never use paper books.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

the thing about the nook is that it does a bunch of other things like games. and im not sure about this but im pretty sure it flips the page, not just the page appearing like a kindle. Same thing with iBooks on the iPad. Being able to just turn an electronic page is good enough for me. But with the kindle. no page turning and no bookmarking.

It's not like the quality of the words you are reading is any different, like it is listening to music on a cd compared to vinyl or cassette. And it saves money and saves paper. Anyway, I use a nook and still go to the library and check out books as well. But I don't smell them or climax when I turn the damn page.
