At one point I realized that too, but then I started seriously thinking about it. I think the reason he holds it like this is because he is so powerful that all he has to do is hold it. Many many years of strength and power radiates from him. It's been written 'a wand is only as good as a wizard'. So it would make sense that the wand he uses has so much power coming from it that you wouldn't even need to grip the wand.
