+251 It doesn't make sense when countries invest billions into things like space exploration when there are thousands of poor impoverished citizens struggling just to survive, amirite?

Their own citizens*

It makes perfect sense, they do it to improve the image of their country to other nations and to their own citizens. It doesn't make sense that people care more about that when it comes to the country's image then how the impoverished survive.

It comes down to whether they want to better advance society or provide aid to its citizens.

(PurplePaintedToenails):Like I said below, we can't forget about the every day problems and focus entirely on advances in technology that aren't of immediate need. There needs to be a medium.

Yes, I totally agree with that. My only point was that space exploration and other programs like that are beneficial as well. If we as a society don't constantly try to make advancements, then we will, in a sense, move backwards which will create even more problems.

I figure that improving technology and developing society are more important than spending ALL of the money on impoverished citizens. Clearly a lot is spent on them already, you know.

By the way, can anybody explain to me the different colors of the comments? Because I said no way and my comment was blue, which was what I least expected.

(Emperorerror):Red = NW, green = YYA, blue = no vote. Refresh the page and your colour should change.

I was watching a program on PBS and the government funded 6 million dollars so tiny cave fish could be researched. 6 MILLION DOLLARS. FOR TINY CAVE FISH.

Well if you start handing out money to poor people/countries, they might become dependent on it, and not try to advance themselves to the point where they can sustain themselves. to help we should educate them and give them guidance so they can get to the self sustaining position
