+496 You remember when schools had chalk boards, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school still has chalkboards in some rooms...so yes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I hate "smart boards" btw. They're only like 4x4 and you have to move out of the way so your shadow doesn't block what you just wrote.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Smart boards don't really replace the boards at my school. We rarely use them because they have no real practical use in any of our classes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We just got a new school and got new projectors that are above the board, and you have to be laying on it to have your shadow shown. We use them A LOT. Our tech teachers get Ipads.. it's all a waste of money tbh.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And what are tech teachers going to do with iPads?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Nothing. The teacher's assistant basically plays on it while the teacher teaches. I guess it's to use examples in class, but that's what's the smart boards are for. It's bad-.- We never even use them in class.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's what I thought. iOS's strong point is games games and more games. I would hardly count on a bigger version of what is practically a toy to increase productivity in any way shape or form. Any tablet in general wouldn't mix well with the classroom.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Our school is really techie, I think they just bought them so the tech leader or whatever could write an article in local newspaper..

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That sounds like a few thousand dollars well spent.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

*tax dollars.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Which is why it was well spent.

n Rich country school. Out of the city y We got 2 new schools in 4 years:O

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Jeez. We've had the same schools for almost as long as I've been alive. And only one of them is good. The other ones are just 'those schools' the non-acceptees get dumped into.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We had like 7 elementary schools scattered around the county, and the closest one you went to you'd go to. We were the same school, just different buildings. So we sold/tore down those schools and moved into this new elementary by the high school. Our junior high was 7th/8th grade only. Then when we got the new elementary it change to 1-5 6-8 9-12. So our middle school is 15 minutes away, and the school is cramped. So we build another middle school in between the high school and elementary. We are centralized. If the high school wasn't at the campus already, we'd be getting a new one.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Jeez. Sounds unorganized. We just go to whatever school was closest to us for elementary and middle school (all of ours have both) and pray to God the good high school accepts us. If it doesn't, you either go to a tech high school or the other high school closest to you. The one on my side.....well....let's just say the stabbed student to not stabbed student ratio isn't quite as small as it should be.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, it could be used for teaching if somebody made an app that would enable you to draw on a PowerPoint presentation and connect the iPad to a projector. Then, it would be like a smart overhead.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That is still something that can easily be done with a computer or smart board. And I'm not sure drawing on a Power Point would help as much as you think. A well made Power Point an work well on its own.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, but it would prevent the shadow from blocking the text, be easier to calibrate, and help teachers who can't stand all day. Also, being able to write on a PowerPoint would be immensely helpful in math and science.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know about your's, but my Math and Science teachers don't use Power Points for Math. And that can still be easily done with the equipment teachers already have without spending 600 dollars per teacher on something that would be not only be barely useful, but can potentially lower productivity more than increase it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They're really bad if you're a lefty. :(

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Regardless of what type of board you use (chalk, marker, smart, projector screen), the teacher will need to move out of the way so the students can see, so that's a non-factor. Also, since smart boards are just starting to come into school, it'll take a while for teachers to change their lesson plans to make full use of this new technology. Right now they may seem pointless and a waste of money, but give it some time and the impact will be felt.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I believe in great teachers rather than new technologies. I just think schools should spend more time evaluating their teachers rather than worrying about the latest electronic crap they have. But you're right, some teachers may be more effective with smart boards. Maybe instead of just throwing them in each classroom, school systems should ask the teachers if they would like to try them. This would save money.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree, my math teacher was the only one who really put the smart board to use. He used it basically as a white board, but he was able to change the back ground to graph paper, make actual even shapes, and save the lectures he wrote for us as a document and posted them for those who missed that day. It was helpful, but I wouldn't say they're perfect of every teacher.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I thought i was old because I remember chalk boards, then realized that I didn't know what a smart board was... Now I feel ancient, thanks kids.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school was just getting smart boards as I was about to graduate high school so I got a little taste of them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school still has them but we use them rarely.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I remember the summer my school transitioned from chalk boards to white boards, and when we came back everybody flipped shit.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Remember floppy disks?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Floppy disks? Disks that were FLOPPY?! Next thing you know it you're gonna tell me you used to use tapes to watch movies!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Our first computer only had like 5 card games and some sort of word processing program. That was it. No mouse. You flipped a switch to turn it on and flipped the same switch to turn it off. There was no desktop or files (that I knew of... I was young).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Which size.. That shows my age, I still remember booting up the school computers from floppys... And playing Oregon trail on floppy..

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't remember... There were more advanced computers out when we had this one, but this was our first.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How old are all of you guys? Because I started going to school in 2000 and my sister started in 1995 and neither of us have ever been in a classroom that used chalk boards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm 22. Every room in my high school had chalk boards. Some of the rooms had dry erase boards on top of the chalk boards but most of the rooms didn't.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm seventeen, and my school nearly exploded with excitement when we got our first dry-erase board. I think I was in 3rd grade then.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's odd... maybe my school was newer or something?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I went to a ghetto private school.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Almost all of the schools I've been to were built at or before 1970.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm only 15 and my school had chalkboards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

so in my first grade class room we used to have a chalk board. then when i visited they had a white board. then i visited again they have a smart board...... -_- they are in first grade! they're writing their first letters on a computer screen

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school has chalk boards, projectors, smart boards, and dry erase boards. And my school is pretty small, only like 60 people in my graduating class, so i dont go to a big school or anything.. We just have a mixture of everything.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

we have a mix of everything as well...every classroom has whiteboards, chalkboards, and an overhead, although only about half have wall-mounted smart boards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've never been to a school with chalkboards, and I've only ever seen one in movies.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My school has more chalkboards than anything ..
