+264 We like to think humans are more civilized today than we were 200 years ago, but really we're still barbarians and murderers, just more efficiently, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's odd seeing an atheist agree with what I think to be a very flawed assumption prevalent in religions, particularly monotheistic ones.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't quite understand what you're talking about.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm convinced that we are actually more barbariac now compared to 200 years ago.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it would be hard to match napoleons barbaricness.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How was Napoleon barbaric? He was a great conqueror, but he didn't slaughter innocent people. As for matching him, Sadam Hussein, Pol Pot, the Taliban. There are a few modern barbarians.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think you have a twisted image from what Napoleon truly did. His soldiers raped so many people he invented the condom so they wouldnt die from std's anymore. He also murdered anyone who didn't agree with his political reforms or refused to be subdued by him. Ofcourse lots of militairy leaders do the same thing, but i dont think they are worse in any way then they were 200 years ago

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, I guess you're right.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well 200 years ago, they could probably spell barbaric...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

UNICEF would have words with you.

I like how one of my history professors put it... "We get up every morning, go to work, and come back home to our families just like they did thousands of years ago. The only difference is that now we have electricity and technology. It doesn't make us smarter or better."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree except I think we have gotten worse. Just think about how beautiful and wonderful sex is. And then think about how we have perverted it with human sex trafficking. I mean girls as young as possible are being sold as sex slaves. Sometimes by their own parents.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sex has always been cheapened like that, it isn't a new thing. At least now there are laws against pedophilia. A few hundred years ago, 12 year olds were married to 30 year olds.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes. I see nothing wrong with parents choosing a good man who can provide for their 12 year old daughter. That is when their bodies are naturally mature enough to bare children. What's so wrong with that?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow, you honestly don't see anything wrong with that? Especially when in a lot of cases the young girls had no choice and were beaten and raped by the men that her parents chose for her to marry.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I said good man. Not abusive man. Abuse is terrible.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also abuse happens today as well. So I don't think it has to do with age.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah but a lot of the time it wasn't like that. And it wasn't even considered bad but normal in society for men to beat their wives. I know when I was 12 I was not mature enough to have a relationship, let alone a married one. Plus the fact that she would have had no choice, she was stuck in a marriage she did not choose. Women who are younger than 15 do have increased risks in pregnancy because their pelvis isn't fully developed yet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Youre right they had no choice. But the divorce rate was much less than what we have now. I'm guessing the abuse wasn't much different. Yes I know that's where the rule of thumb came from but I don't see the connection to her being younger. That was just an abusive society. Yes their pelvis was undeveloped but they could still bear children.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol the divorce rate was much lower because women weren't allowed to file for divorce even if her husband was abusive. And divorce was a social taboo, people were ostracised from the community if they had one, so they were avoided as much as possible. Abuse is much different now because there are consequences for the abuse, back then it was legal and much more common as it was acceptable. Yes they could still bear children, but it was dangerous for them and many died trying. I still don't understand how you think it's fine for a 12 year old girl to get married.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I just feel that the government should not have a say in who is allowed to marry and to whom they can marry.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sex slavery is not more of a problem than it was in the 1800s (200 years ago). Actually, all forms of slavery were way way worse in the 1800s.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think that 200 years ago 6 year olds were servicing up to 20 men a night.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why not? Pedophilia is not a 21st century invention.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I was just thinking this the other day, about how we used to have people fight to the death for our amusement, now we just have people fight until they're unconscious. And we still settle moral and political disputes with mass violence. It's weird to think about.
