Simplification is natural in any language. So far American English has simplified even the remnants of ye olde grammar, and with most people learning American as the par lingua it will become standardized. The natural course from here is to continue simplifying the spelling. Though it will probably not lead to l33tsp33k. Usually languages slow down and stop simplification altogether, but English is still a young language and has yet to settle.
