She didn't raise that kid obviously. That kid needs to get beat.

Hit that kid with a fucking shovel~~~

Amen.

I'm American and I agree.

I think you can't really generalize every single American as raising their kids in one weird way. Parenting differs person to person.

Made this post following a conversation on a forum. Mostly referring to the fact that a 12-year-old walking home from school is considered weird(at least where the people in the conversation were from at least...)
by Anonymous12 years ago
That's not weird in most places. It just depends on how rural the area is. In my elementary school which was in a residential neighborhood it wasn't weird, but my high school was more in the boonies were there weren't sidewalks to walk on so it'd be weird to walk home if you lived more than a quarter mile away.

I think kids should walk to school in kindergarten. A lot of americans do spoil their kids way too much, but it's more of a first-world thing not just the USA
by Anonymous12 years ago
It's because parents these days let their kids get away with murder. Hell, they'd probably help the kid bury the body.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Depends on your definition of weird.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I don't understand how you can assume that. Everyone raises their kids differently.

Wait, do you consider that weird or does someone else? And yes, everybody has the same opinion about whether or not a child is old enough to walk to school...
by Anonymous12 years ago
Most kids around here start walking home from school around elementary. If someone were to constantly supervise their 12-year-old kid they'd be considered ridiculously overprotective. Whereas from recent conversations I have been told that if a 12-year-old would be seen alone on the streets in the US authorities would be called...
I find it extremely weird that a 12 year old is generally considered to require supervision. And though individual parents will obviously raise their children in their own way, the general mindset will affect the child's growth considerably.

I've been walking home regularly since I was 12. And I walked home sometimes in elementary when my parents were going to be home early. But that's because I lived close to both schools. I think it depends on where the kids live and how paranoid their parents are. If I lived and a bad part of town, I know they wouldn't have let me walk.
by Anonymous12 years ago
America is different than a lot of other places in that there aren't as many sidewalks and walking any long distance is uncommon for almost anyone. That probably has something to do with it. Oh and my brother walked home at age 11 in the US and it wasn't an issue. It was just different cause most kids took the bus/got picked up.
by Anonymous12 years ago
The authority would be called? Haha. I see kids walking home from school everyday, some are around 6 mind you.
Maybe you should research a little better and not believe some forum.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well, it's not like I plan on going there and finding out myself. A forum of people saying that it is so has as much value as someone saying that it is not.
by Anonymous12 years ago
So if you read that American children danced to the Macarana before every meal on a forum, you'd believe that too?
by Anonymous12 years ago
No, that's just you being silly.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm not silly.

It's more of a geographical thing. The houses that are in walking distance are usually in bad parts of a neighborhood so a twelve year old would be in possible danger. A lot of people live further outside of town, out of walking distance. Is that the only reason it's weird how Americans raise their kids?
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm American and I've been walking home alone since elementary. In middle school, I was allowed to take the subway alone. You can't judge the whole population based off of a forum. I don't know where you're from, but I might think you raise your kids "weird" too. That word is relative. In Brooklyn recently, a nine year old kid was allowed to walk home line for the first time from his Jewish camp. He was kidnapped and murdered.I can understand why parents might be concerned.

I lived in a small town but I went to school 30min away (driving) in a dangerous city. I didn't walk, obviously. Then in high school I went to school in another city that you can only get to by driving on the highway. My school has no buses, so my parents drove me e eryday. I wouldn't say that's "weird" or over protective, just practical. Then when I turned 16 and got my license I drove everyday. So...you can't really make the generalization that ALL Americans raise their kids weird, because there are millions of Americans and you can't look at all of them on a case to case basis.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Can't you say that about every single stereotype ever, though?
