+384 I do not get why society seems to glorify mental illness like ADD, OCD, bipolar, and schizophrenia. It does not make sense that people think it would be cool to have those illnesses, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I dont think they glorify it, ADD is definitely over diagnosed tho

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I have to say, a lot of the time it is not so much glorification as ridicule. Which just makes it that much harder, as someone who does have a serious mental illness. It's no fun.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

u actually spelt schizophrenia correct instead of 'skitzofrenia' congrats

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're congratulating the OP's grammar, and yet you use bad grammar and spelling yourself?

They're not glorified, people are just idiots. Individuality is what's glorified, and they set themselves apart by self-diagnosing some psychological disorders so they can act a little odd and say, "Oh, I'm just ADD/OCD! TEEHEE IM GAY!" I'd reckon people feign bipolar disorder so they don't have to grow up and face problems in a reasonable way. They'd rather be immature and blame their ridiculous behavior on another self-diagnosed disorder. I've never heard of people claiming to be schizophrenic. I imagine that'd be extremely difficult.

My friend has diagnosed herself as schizophrenic- or at least she pretends to have some sort of multiple personality disorder. She just does it for attention because she's weird that way.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's not weird, that's freaking scary. What the f**k is her problem?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think you're right on all of those except Schizophrenia...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's this "popular" girl I know of, and supposedly she has OCD, ADD, Bipolar disorder, many bullshit phobias(afraid of the dark, afraid of becoming fat, afraid of being alone), and it pisses me off how that is considered "cool" when I actually have ADD/ADHD, and OCD, but you don't see me being popular.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Life with ADHD is a hell of a lot more enjoyable than with out it. Or at least more fun than ADHD hidden by medication.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I mean it would suck to have schizophrenia! Ha ha what? It'd be awesome. Guys just shut up that's rude to make fun of those patients. SHUT UP.

ADD is over diagnosed though. My friend says the doctor says she have and gave her meds (but couldnt take them because she had a side affect) but without them she is reading a 2000 page book without looking away just it seems to magically appear when she is doing school work or things she hates. I feel bad for the people that really have it and struggle to get meds because of the over diagnosis. the ones that cant focus on anything. Hey my doctor once said I have it while I focus the most in class. Doctors need to wise up and diagnose only people that have it. Not people that are just to lazy to do work and blame it on ADD. Let only the people that have it get the meds. Don't just let them struggle.

Those pill pushing bastards!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's part of ADD/ADHD though. People with it tend to focus really well on things they enjoy, but it's nearly impossible to concentrate on things they don't find interesting.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But she chooses not to concetrate, doesnt even put in the smallest fuck of effort, doesnt even try, diagnosis, lazy.

(...): Ah, I gotcha.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

(...): (long explanation, sorry) as a kid i was always "questionable" for ADD, it wasn't that I couldn't focus on things i was supposed to, it was that i would "hyper-focus" on things i wasn't supposed to be and refused to be dragged away 'til i was done. Never medicated. Then around age 14, i unknowingly contracted lyme disease, which went untreated for roughly a year and a half. A fairly unknown but common side effect of undiagnosed lyme disease for >6 months or so is severe escalation of existing mental issues. Now, I have fairly severe ADD and I can tell you, at least for me, without medication i literally cannot concentrate if I am not actively interested. Though it appears to others to be a lack of effort, it most definitely is not, and it can be extremely frustrating. and if you actually read all this, thank you :)

I wouldn't even consider ADD/ADHD a mental illness. It just means you have a short attention span. My elementary school tried to put me on medd because they said I had it, I was always doodling, making helicopters out of pens and rulers, tapping my feet, etc. My mom basically told them to fuck off :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Now, homicidal rage, that's a cool thing to have.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People who pretend to have those ailments just want attention and to feel like they are different, but not overly weird. Personally, I find it really petty.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't know if it's glorified as much as it's trivialized. People just don't consider mental illness as seriously as they probably should. That's why people think that they're "cool".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Thank you for being reasonable,ACCURATE, unlike the op. Unless you live int he hell of mental illness, you have no idea what you are talkign about so kindly stuff it,op.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They are trivialized. I have family members that have been diagnosed with bipolar, schizoaffective disorder, and ocd. I don't appreciate it when people say, "So and so is bipolar." or "He's schizophrenic." It's like fuck off you have no idea what it's really like.

My friend messed up her hearing one day, and so she kept missing things in school. Her mom took her to the doctor and the doctor prescribed her ADHD medication, because she "wasn't listening to him." She took them for a whole week until she went suicidal. After that, she went back to the doctor and he recommended them again. She threw the bottle in his face.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I have a generalized anxiety disorder, and every time I try to talk about it with some of my friends, they say something along the lines of "Oh, I think I have that too!" It makes me mad, because they're not listening and they don't know what it's like to actually have it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I actually think I might be bipolar. I am usually depressed if not really depressed. Right now I feel fine, but I've also gone a few days with what feels like extra energy compared to what I normally feel. I have mentioned this multiple times to people not to be annoying but to maybe get help.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I do have ADHD and without the medication I can't pay attention and can't keep quiet. If I forget to take my medication I go the whole day worrying about annoying people.
