+189 The driving age should STAY at 16 in the U.S., amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree! It is so important to keep the driving age at 16 because at 16 teens have a lot of different responsibilities! I believe the statistics only prove that driving takes experience, and not that 16-year-olds are too immature to drive.

First, the driving age isn't national law, it's state law. Second, your ignorance to this proves that 16 year olds don't have the patience, knowledge and skill to drive. Change the age to 18 and require 2 years and 300 hours before taking the road test in my opinion. Also, EVERYONE should be required to be able to drive a manual transmission and the driver's exam should be much more difficult than it is and everyone should have to retake it every time their license expires. Most people on the road shouldn't be driving, not just teens.

My sister just turned 16 when she had her written exam. Aced it. She practiced with my parents, driving, for quite some time. She passed her test on the first try, and even took driver's ed. She drives me to school, since we're both in high school, and she brings my siblings places in case my mom is busy. She buys stuff when needs to, and can bring herself to study parties. As a junior in 2 AP classes and honors classes, studying is vital. Like I said in my first post, my parents can't get everyone everywhere with 2 jobs each. My sister can be ditzy, but she's a focused driver. She stays at the speed limit, and adjusts to different weather. She's VERY careful. Why should everyone have to wait longer because a few teens decide to text or call, or are just distracted?

YOUR SISTER IS SO SMART, WOW SHE MUST BE A REALLY COOL PERSON WITH SO MANY PROVABILITIES.@120271 (TheNexHitler):

Actually, like other teenagers, she does make some mistakes. I'm just saying not all teenagers are, "DUDE! LETZ GET HIGH!" or "zong! text message! let me rizpond wyl drivin"

My mom has 4 kids. My dad signs us up for recreational sports, and we also have our school clubs and sports. My parents work 2 jobs each, and it's so difficult to get us everywhere. It requires hours of planning nights before. It was a MIRACLE when my sister got her license. She can help shop, pick people up, and drive herself. It made everything easier. She's a senior in a few months, and obviously will be preparing for college. I turn 16 in a few months, so my parents will prepare me and whatnot. Younger age doesn't mean immaturity. Obviously, if someone seems distracted while driving, they don't deserve a license. Some people are genuinely careful and want to help out family. That's all I have to say about that, for now.

No, it shouldn't just be 16 and nothing else. Here in South Dakota, you can take driver's ed if you are 14, which I did. You then get your learner's permit for three months with the driver's education program, and sixth months without. Once those months pass, you get your Restricted Permit, which is essentially a Driver's License, but you can only drive from 6 AM to 10 PM. Once you turn 16, you get your final Driver's License. I'd rather have South Dakota's system, rather than waiting until I'm 16 to even get my learner's permit.

Just because it makes it easier for someone, or you know a 16 year old who is a really great driver doesn't mean that it applies to the majority. Let's face it, teenagers (myself included) as a whole, cause a lot of accidents. And most of my friends are terrors to society behind the wheel.

If you are in favor of more people dying because of immaturity and stupid decisions, then yes, by all means, keep it at 16. I am 15, by the way...

Age doesn't always affect maturity. I know 7th graders that are more mature than 10th graders
