+93 America is no longer "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave." We are not free. In fact, true freedom is just one of the many things we fear, amirite?

How so?

Here are some of the ways in which you are not free: You're not free to marry whom you choose. You're not free to smoke whatever you want. You're not free to not support welfare programs, even if you don't agree with them. You're not free to bake cookies and sell them on the street as a source of income, even if you desperately need the money. You're not free to drink the milk from your own cow. You're not free to defend the right to your personal privacy and space at airports. You're not free to not fight in a war that you don't personally support if the government makes you. You're not free to work for anything under $8.25 an hour, even if you are willing to settle for less.

And here are some of the reasons society fears freedom: You fear that if the government stopped regulating food production, we would have arsenic in our cereal. You fear that if the government stopped interfering so much in the education of our children, they will somehow become stupider. You fear that if federal student loans ended, you wouldn't be able to afford to go to college. You fear that if we legalize marijuana and other drugs, everyone will start doing them. You fear that if the government stopped redistributing your wealth, there would be no one to take care of the poor. You fear that if the government doesn't control the market, corporations will take over everything (when in fact, it's the corporations that are lobbying for more government control) You fear that if we let people marry whom we choose, it will destroy the morality of our society. Here's a relevant quote by the great Benjamin Franklin "Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security."

In PA it's $7.25 and I already work for under the table money. Not allowed, but hey.

Those are laws, which have been around since the beginning of America's creation. by your logic, America has never been the "land of the free" nor has any country ever experienced true freedom

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's exactly right.

Then leave if you don't like it

Reaaaaallly.

True freedom is impossible. That would give people the right to kill whoever they wanted. And dead people are rarely free.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It never was a place of freedom any more than any other place.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Really? Because I kind of thought we had more freedom than any place that had a dictator, but I guess I was wrong.

There are a whole bunch of ways we are freer, though. You can list all of the social issues we have, and say we are "no longer" free, but I can almost guarantee that 50 years ago those same social problems were worse. Sure, gay marriage is not legal countrywide, but at least it is in some states where that was not the case 50 years ago. You can get legal abortion, not everywhere, but it's still an improvement from many years ago. Civil rights have improved, due process has improved, education has improved, and a whole host of other things. Sure we have more regulation, but some of that regulation has made us freer, by limiting discrimination, for example. I don't think with things like segregation, slavery, and unclean food and drugs in the past, you can say that we are "no longer" the land of the brave and the home of the free. A lot (yes, not all) has improved. Besides, freedom is relative.

Seriously? You're complaining when you live in one of the most free and wealthy countries on earth? You can try China or North Korea if you don't like it here.

So....we're the land of the free...est?

Airplane security is something im glad to give up my freedom for. I want to fly to any destination without crashing in a ball of fire somewhere. Also what its sounds like the people above describe freedom as is not having a government. Which is anarchy, and as much as fallout 3 sounds cool. I dont want to kill my neighbors over food or self protection. The government keeps me safe for the most part. And honestly i love my nation and for the most part im satisfied with my government. And if a draft did happen, sure my liberties would be infringed upon but only to make sure that the rest of my country can have the freedoms were lucky to have. So to sum up this rant. True freedom = anarchy and kind of a moot point. Our freedom as of know = were pretty lucky to have and government isnt out to get us.
