-153 It should become a law where you must be at least 14 years old to have a cell phone, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i had to get a cell phone when I was 11 or 12 because I was going to start walking over a mile twice a day to/from school. Maybe the law should be against smart phones or texting plans, but I did need that flip phone in case something happened on my way.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You could have used a pay phone. Little kids with cell phones will become the down fall to our society.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are no pay phones anywhere in this town or the surrounding ones, much less any along my old route. I never used it for anything other than calling my parents for various reasons.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ypu should have had your parents drive you or a friend. There are thousands of different solutions than using a cell phone. Trust me, young people do not know how to use cell phones correctly. They should be left up to the adults. You probably won't agree with me anyways, because you're probably a young ignorant teen.

It's hardly fair to call me ignorant. I'm merely trying to defend my case. I actually came up with reasons as to why I think younger kids than 14 are capable of owning cell phones, and even provided alternate solutions - outlawing smartphones or texting plans instead. So far you haven't named any concrete reasoning for your opinion. I'm not sure about you, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing your take on this, which is the polar opposite of ignorance. All you seem to be doing is shutting down my case with no real outline for doing so and hearing, but not listening. Am I the ignorant one in this exchange?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Honey, I've seen kids with cell phones constantly lose them, use them to find drug dealers, break them on purpose, and use them to tease and bully their peers. Cell phones come with loads of responsibility which younger people do not have.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Whoa whoa, the second and fourth points are terrible. If kids were going to do those things, a lack of a cell phone wouldn't stop them, believe me. And some kids are mature and responsible enough to handle cell phones. I believe it's under the parent's discretion whether or not their children can or cannot handle it. Also, I really enjoy how you ignored the vast majority of my last post. Please don't call me "honey" so condescendingly either. Don't get me wrong, preteens can't handle it most of the time. But if it's necessary for their safety to own one, I think it;s perfectly acceptable.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They end up doing dangerous things with them and cell phones make the whole process easier.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Do you just read the first two sentences of my replies and then stop? It's quite rude. I made other points too, and in your favor.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, I read your replies, but I don't think they should have a cell phone at all. Hell, they shouldn't even know how to use one.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Back to where you called me ignorant. I'm giving you counterarguments and trying to understand why you think what you do, but you're just "They shouldn't have one no matter what." I'm not going to waste my time debating with someone so close-minded. Thank you for entertaining me, but it's still my opinion that cell phones, while they can be unnecessary for some tweens, those with safety needs deserve them, because you hardly gave me reason to think otherwise. And with that, goodnight.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Honey, you'll going to look back on this argument in a few years and realize how ignorant you sound.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Anonymous, or shall I say "Honey", I believe you're the ignorant one in this case.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Congratulations! You've demonstrated yourself to be more of an idiot than anyone I've seen in at least the last year or so! Normally I save the insults for later in a conversation, once the hostility has initiated. However, I have no interest in actually conversing with you. I do, on the other hand, want you to be fully aware of my opinion of you. Which is, if you forgot, that you are an idiot. A big one.

You just got trolled hard. This troll isn't even that good, but you still fell for him.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I knew it was probably a troll, I just decided to practice my debating skills hehe

There is something very wrong with you.

My parents divorced when I was 8. So, since my parents refused to talk to each other, and my mom couldn't afford a phone at the time, I had to have my own to contact the other parent to pick me up from each other's houses.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think it should be a law, but parents should have better judgement. I mean, do eight year olds really need an iPhone?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

True, I also think that if it actually serves a purpose, such as the kid coming into the house by themselves, doing an after school activity, ect., kids younger than 11 should have parental controls on them and not have access to the Internet or texting and just have a flip phone.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's up to the parents to decide when the child is mature enough to handle the responsibilty of having a cell phone.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I got a phone when I was 13. I was involved in a ton of extracurriculars so I needed it to get in touch with my mom to pick me. I didn't text and it was a crappy used phone. I wouldn't recommend getting a 10 year old an iPhone but in the end, that's not really something you can outlaw. It's the parents' decision.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not that I agree or disagree with middle schoolers having cell phones, but this in no way should be a law as it takes away liberties of people.

As soon as the child starts going to school (or any other place) by himself without any adult supervision, it is okay for him to have a cell phone, even if he is six. Does this mean he should have a Blackberry? No. They should not have a phone more complex than absolutely necessary.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think the right age to get a phone is once a kid enters junior high/middle school. Sure, smart phones aren't necessary, especially not for a kid who's nine or so, but outlawing them is a foolish idea.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I got my first phone just before I joined secondary school (I was a month off being 12). It cost £15 and mum put £20 credit on there for me to use to contact her and other family and it took me over a year to use it up. Even now (15) I barley use my phone and I am still on pay as you go with a basic £30 phone because that's what I like. I don't need a fancy phone because I rarely use it and to be honest I don't believe young children should have phones, but once you go to secondary school, and especially if you make your own way there and back, you need a phone for safety reasons and to make sure your parents know what's going on.

Barley lol

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think that teenagers should be allowed to have cell phones and whatnot, but I am so sick of 6 year olds walking around with iPhone's.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I feel really spoilt because because I got my first phone at 8, but it was a tiny block phone with no camera and a small green screen with 3 games that cost $25. I think people under 14 should have phones, but not ridiculously expensive smartphones.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I had a phone when I was 10 >.> It was cool because that way my mom wouldn't have to call various houses(ours, my grandma's or my friends') to know where I was at.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What you are not considering is the fact that technology is getting cheaper and cheaper. A phone that was like fifty dollars five years ago costs like fifteen dollars now. I do occasionally get annoyed by a five year old on a smartphone, but it's like a gaming devise and phone to them. The same can be said about cameras. Just think about the toys you grew up with and then wonder what the generation before you had. Where your toys really nessessary. No, but they were a source of entertainment just like smart phones or regular phones are to kids today. Pluss, what many people said in the comments before me when there is a situation where a phone is necessary such as a kid with divorced parents. Add that to the fact that in modern times, it is considered a norm for peaple to have cells. Wow I'm rambling in an unorganized fashion. I'll stop now. :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As long as the kid knows how to use one appropriately, why shouldn't they be allowed to have a phone? Don't you think parents would like to be able to get in touch with their kid when they need to?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You all just got trolled

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I got a cell phone when I was 8 (Sprint Rumor, slide phone) and I only got it because my parents are deaf, and I stay at school until 4 every Wednesday, and called my grandpa to pick me up.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

its just plain sad if you have a cell phone before high school because now in days, kids dont do anything, they just sit inside playing call of duty. why do they need a phone. believe it or not, humanity can manage to survive without texting every second of the day.
