Not really. Despite being creeped out for days after, I thought that book was amazing.

The ending gave the story perspective; if it had been different, the story's message would have been completely different. The story followed Winston's rise to dissidence and opposition to the state through his expressions of love and loyalty to something other than the Party. Over the course of the book, he promises to never betray his love and his cause; he'll say whatever he needs to when asked by the Party, but deep down he'd never mean it. Or so he thought; for when the moment of truth arose, he was in so much pain that he truly meant it when he said he would rather impart the pain and torture on his lover than experience it any longer, effectively betraying her.
"And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn’t really mean it. But that isn’t true. At the time when it happens you do mean it. You think there’s no other way of saving yourself and you’re quite ready to save yourself that way. You want it to happen to the other person. You don’t give a damn what they suffer. All you care about is yourself."
The ending signified the futility of conviction, reason and loyalty in the face of phys...

Yeah, there were like no good New Year's Eve parties in 1984, it did really suck.

It was just the right ending for the story, but I was frustrated with the main character's circumstances nonetheless.

Eh, the whole book kind of made me angry, but that might just be because I had to read and annotate it in a day :P

I did this book for my research paper....only read like 10 pages. I heard it was good, though.

I would have liked it more if they overthrew the government and established a democracy and showed everyone how wrong they were. But Orwell doesn't write those kind of books. (cry2)
