Sorry to rip apart your post, OP, but I need somewhere to rant. That's not close-knit; those are locally known memes that anypony who's been here a week would recognize. They are consistently upvoted because they make ponies feel included, like an inside joke, without any actual socialization or acceptance required. There are honestly tons of close-knit communities on the Internet (check any small forum) with ponies who genuinely care about each other and accept any newcomers with open arms. That's partially why (I think) the MLP communities are so popular. But I would bet that if somepony responded to that hypothetical comment with "I'm new here; what do those mean?" they would be bombarded with downvotes and "gtfo newb" comments, with maybe one helpful comment. I'm probably a hypocrite myself, seeing as how I hardly contribute anymore, but there is more to a successful online community than memes. There needs to be more actual discussion and conversation. Newcomers should be welcomed rather than shunned right off the bat. Get to know other users. Make creative comments, not just "u stold this from blabla."
