To be fair, I think SOME old games, such as Deus Ex, Planescape:Torment, or Ocarina of Time, none of which I played as a kid, are definitely as good as newer games. I wouldn't say that as a rule old games are as good or better though.

I was going to add "for the most part," decided not to. It's just annoying when people claim things like "There will never be a game as good as 'so and do.'"

some new games are an exception (anyone play Forza 4? wow) but generally they are worse. look at kingdom hearts, secret of mana, diddy kong racing, splinter cell, timesplitters. all those games were AMAZING, but now they wouldnt make it because a lot of people dont care for a storyline as much. CoD4 is another great example. there will never be a CoD that good because it took all the original ideas.

Certain aspects like graphics definitely are, but in a lot of games the actual gameplay isn't as fun as their predecessors. A lot of the time when games' sequels are developed by different companies/people they fail to capture the magic of the old games.

I don't think when it was made really matters, what matters is the writing quality. New games have an unfortunate tendency to focus on graphics rather than plot or mechanics. Then again, old games probably did that too, back when they were the top graphics. I think what makes a game appealing is the amount of effort into making a good story, or good characters, or good gameplay. And that's true no matter when the game was made. But that's just my opinion. :P

Box art definitely hasn't improved though. As an example, go through your games, and count how many feature someone looking or walking toward or slightly off to the side of the camera. Not to mention that every other game now is about some form of space marines. Except for the Japanese ones, of course; there, it's more a game of 'how naked can we make these people without getting arrested?'

I hate when people say, "well you only like the old Nickelodeon because you watched it as a kid." Well how do you explain why I still like old Nickelodeon and think that all the new shows are crap? Same with video games (except I've never really gotten into video games).
