-106 The pen is so much less mighty than the sword. Sure, literature can influence beliefs and opinions of many people, but I feel like it's much more mighty to pierce through a human body with a forged steel blade than to write a cute poem about nature or whatever. amirite?

A piece of literature can be powerful enough to influence that person to kill that other person with a sword. Realistically, you could only stab a person with a sword so many times until you get caught or whatever. Like, 10 peoplee max. I dunno. With writing, you could definitely influence more people's lives.

There's a mythology tale that basically what happened is that this guy made a vet with a god that get could get more people to fight for him than the god could. They split 200 men or each to work with, and the guy asked the first solider if he would fight for him. He said no, and he killed him with a sword. He asked the next solider, who said yes for not wanting to be killed. The guy went down the line doing the same thing and ended up with 99 soliders. The god took the time to write a speech, and encouraged all 100 of his soliders to fight for him. 99<100 or sword<pen.

well now if the guy wouldve cut like the dudes pinky off or maybe an ear he still couldve had 100 men

I get the feeling that the fact that he was a god had something to do with his perfect attendance.

If a pen is mightier than the sword, why are actions louder than words?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol I don't think this proverb means "Poems are better than weapons".

I personally think heartbreak hurts worse than a broken bone.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What about the effects of a death? Surely a sword would cause death, and a death can lead to heartbreak and other negative emotions. So, in some cases, the sword would be mightier, but not always (since not all scenarios would play out the same).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I can't imagine that death hurts that much... I mean, I'm sure it does, but no matter how long it takes, it will definitely be shorter than the heartbreak that my loved ones would suffer. In which case, the heartbreak would still hurt worse.

literature can influence millions of people in a few ways. a sword can influence a few people in a million ways. take your pick. i personally agree though

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree. I can't think of how a sword could possibly be able to influence somebody in a million ways. Whereas words can be rearranged and adjusted and formatted and chosen in so many different combinations and languages that there are infinite ways to influence somebody. Plus that influence isn't limited by how far your sword can reach. So pen > sword. In my opinion.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i could cut off your hands. you would be "influenced" to never write again. see my point?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Never mind. It really was one; I just wanted to see your reaction when I told you it was two. It's really funny when people completely lose it on here :)

The constituition formed this country and caused us to fight wars based on the writing of it. At times the pen can't do as much because some people will never change their ways and that's where the sword comes into play. I feel the sword picks up where the pen left off.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are many cases where a pen wouldn't do the job. Some people can't be convinced. Meanwhile, everyone can be killed.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was a gigantic instigator of the Civil War. Don't knock the power of literature.

Remember wars start with written declarations of war and end with written treaties.
