+270 People should stop complaining about Americans calling it soccer. What are we supposed to do? Change the name soccer to football and change football to 'oddly-shaped-ball'? We call it soccer. Get over it, amirite?

Now that that issue is out of the way, we need to focus our energies on finding a way to stop soccer fans from rioting so often.

*soccer moms Haha.. I hate that word.

Or maybe you should call it handegg instead of football! Seriously, most of the game is played by throwing the ball from one hand to another and the ball actually looks like an egg. Naming it football just because the ball is a Foot long, that's just......

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It looks nothing like an egg.

USA isn't the only country to call it soccer...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

USA is the only country I ever hear anybody complain about calling it soccer.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe because, oh I don't know, you're American?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No. There's this thing called the internet that allows me to communicate with people all around the world. None of these people have ever complained about other countries calling it soccer.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, other countries' citizens do complain about people calling it soccer. For example, New Zealand, Canada, etc. Your internet research seems to not have produced very effective results.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just give it up, dude.

I think calling it soccer is better. Everyone knows what you mean when you say soccer, but when you call it football people are like do you mean soccer/american football/rugby.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, that's because you live in America! If you say "football" HERE, people will think instantly of what you call soccer. If you say "soccer" here, people would be confused: "wait, what? Why are you calling it that? Isn't it just like American football?", "well it isn't 'American football' technically, that's what they call something else, but it's the American WORD for what we call football, yeah", "sooo.... just say football?". But I totally agree. Call it whatever the hell you want. You could call it "runny-kicky-pigskins" for all I care, as long as I know what you're getting at.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If I ever go to Europe I'll call it football.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't live in America.... I am a neutral party outside of America or England.

What I read on the Internet is that at the time, the Brits called football soccer, and there was no sport called only "football" at the time. http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/orema/british_redditors_are_there_any_americanisms_you/c3jg0w2
