+454 You question the logic in letting a groundhog determine the seasonal patterns of America, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Are you serious?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'd say it's probably a better idea than who's running the country now.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I only ever doubt the groundhog when it says 6 more weeks of winter.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There's actually a reason for that. Only in America is there a special breed of magical, weather predicting groundhogs. If other countries tried to do what we do with their normal groundhogs, they'd look silly.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wait wtf?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I like how some people haven't heard of Groundhog day. But, hey, I know a ton of people who believe in astrology. And don't get me started on religion.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why don't you believe in astrology?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You do know what that is right? Horoscopes? Not astronomy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm offended. You obviously don't know who you're talking to.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I meant no offense, I was just clarifying.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, then you won't be offended when I clarify that horoscopes aren't exactly astrology. Astrology is predicting a person's personality, horoscopes is predicting a person's future. Yes, they both involve zodiacs, but they are different.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Um, no they are based on the constellations, they are the same thing. Either way, it's silly.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, so since you're the expert, explain to me why exactly it's "silly".

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because our perception of star formations that may or may not be there anymore that happen to look a certain way are not able to tell us the future. Silly.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, I get what you're saying about the constellations moving. However, it's not about the FUTURE. That's horoscopes.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, same with personality, it's totally unrelated to mystical star patterns.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It is still linking arbitrarily grouped star formations to the personality of some life form an incredible distance away. Stars that may have died millions of years ago.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe because the actual constellations have moved since the original personality types were tacked to them, and chances are most people weren't actually born under the zodiac they were assigned, and yet still can find similarities. The descriptions are vague enough that nearly anyone can feel attached or relate to nearly any sign.

Here's the thing that really bugs me about it. If the groundhog sees his shadow, there'll be 6 more weeks of winter...but if he sees his shadow, it's going to be sunny out at that moment. Meaning, the weather is nice (ish). So why would we have more winter when it's sunny, and less winter when it's cloudy? Makes no sense to me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's sunny all the time in winter...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, not when it's snowing or sleeting... I dunno...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What he means is that the sun is always in existence during the winter.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

-_- Yeah, that's completely true, but it's an obvious and irrelevant statement. If you'd read my original post, I implied (and possibly even stated) that I was talking about the sun AT THE INSTANT that the groundhog is performing the ceremony. Obviously the sun exists during the winter, but that doesn't mean it will be sunny outside.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it's because he hibernates during the winter, so if the shadow scared him and he went back down in his hole, it would be as if he is still hibernating. And if there was no shadow, then he wouldn't hibernate anymore. ... Something like that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I still don't see why it is a groundhog that decides our future. Hate to break it to you, but it already smells like spring in Maine, therefore I doubt there will be more winter.
