+381 Even though it's never depicted in portraits or paintings, people who lived hundreds of years ago must have had really bad acne, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Absolutely. Daily bathing is sort of a modern invention so people back then must have looked and smelled disgusting.

It's weird though because they look perfectly groomed in old pictures...

They didn't eat all the processed shit we eat these days...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That hasn't got much to do with acne.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It kind of does actually. Processed foods normally contain loads of fat and sugar, ingesting those things in abundance messes with your blood sugar levels which can lead to acne. But unless your allergic to something your diet won't DIRECTLY affect your skin, though it's definitely one of the contributing factors.

Only kind of. You can eat extremely healthily (which in my opinion would be a pretty crap life compared to having some junk food every now and then), but your skin will still be bad if it's in your hormones' cards.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh for sure, that's why I said contributing factor. Hygiene and other things come into play.

As the person said above, acne is mainly just from all the processed food. My friends mum went to Japan when she was in High School and the processed food hadn't been introduced then. She had acne but no one else did, and so she started eating the Japanese food and her acne cleared up right away because it was natural and healthy. Moral of the story: They probably had good skin back then because they didn't have the processed food.

Not necessarily. Your body naturally produces enough oils to keep it (hair, skin, etc) healthy. The only reason we get 'greasy' after not washing for a while is because, by washing so often, we've messed up the natural balance of oils we produce, causing is to produce much more than we needed-- resulting in acne, greasy hair, etc.

People back then had less pollution and they didn't eat such processed food, everything was more organic. Also the meat was healthier and wasn't loaded up with hormones. There soaps as well weren't filled with all the harsh chemicals and didn't dry the skin out nearly as much. My bet is they probably didn't have acne
