+53 You would not be opposed to legalizing polygamy as long as everyone involved knew what they were getting into and could consent. It would probably be a legal minefield what with wills and hospital visitation rights and shared bank accounts, but it isn't hurting anyone, amirite?

If gay marriage gets legalized everywhere then so should polygamy.

Logically, there really isn't any problem with it. As long as everyone agrees, what the hell, why not. I guess the only reason someone would object is because it's not what most modern people are used to. Basically, like being gay was 50 years ago.

As long as polyandry was legalized along with it.

I think that goes without saying. But still, legality and popularity are completely separate. There would probably be many more marriages with multiple women that those with multiple men, because of some ego problems. Personally, I'd never be polygamous in any way.

Yeah. Same here. I do not advocate polygamy/polyandry and will never participate in it. However, there are a lot of places where polygamy is legal but polyandry is not. Many of the Islamic states allow and encourage polygamy but if a woman is even seen with another man, she would be killed. Even in the States, the fundamentalist mormon church encourages polygamy but scorns upon polyandry. I just wanted to make the point since disparities in multiple marriage laws/ideologies already exist.

I meant if there's a global reform in marriage. Not to be racist, but a lot of Islamic laws are pretty screwed up.

Islamic laws aren't screwed up, it's Saudi Arabian laws that are screwed up (and many other middle eastern countries). In Islam, polygamy is ONLY allowed if the man can treat his wives equally in wealth, property etc and that he can take proper care of them. He must also provide them with equal love and affection. All of the wives must agree to this. It's important to know that just because a country has a vast majority of Muslims in it, DOES NOT mean that they practice the authentic Shariah law and Islamic teachings (they actually do quite the opposite). Don't take Saudi Arabia as an example of what Muslims act like.

Yeah I know. I don't mean them in pure form, I mean what they've turned into in Saudi Arabia and if I'm not wrong a handful of other nations that claim to follow Shariah law.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That is exactly why I also said other Middle Eastern countries. Shariah Law is very complicated and no one practices the real thing, because of they did, it would not be so bad in those countries. They've twisted everything to fulfill their own desires. The first rule of shariah law is that you cannot enforce it on those who are not Muslim and it's violated so much.

The other day, I was talking with someone who i knew was extremely conservative and opposed gay marriage. He said he supported polygamy and im like //"why"// and then he said: "because its between consenting adults." you should have seen the look on my face.
