+268 Many people think grades show how smart beings are. What people are forgetting is that hard work mainly determines their grades, amirite?

true. hard work and intelligence aren't mutually exclusive. In fact they usually aren't found in the same person.

I somewhat disagree with the second part. Some people get better grades without trying at all. It isn't mainly hard work for all people, usually it's natural intelligence and if you still aren't getting the grade you want, you supplement it with hard work.

But it is still work. Like doing homework (not at the last minute and guessing) and working hard on projects. Some lazy people that don't get good grades, are sometimes actually very smart.

I see where you are coming from. I think we just consider "hard work" different things. Personally I thought that it was referring to going above and beyond studying for tests and such, not completing the regular requirements of a course. And yeah, I do see those lazy people who are actually smart. My opinion is just that neither hard work nor intelligence are the main determinant of a grade, I feel they are equally important factors.

I don't really believe in "natural intelleigience" maybe for a certain brand of Elite, but I think for the most part, the presence of education lies with effort. There is no "naturalness" to it, it's just what influences you are exposed to or allow to be exposed.. The smart student puts effort in his work, indulges and thinks about the topic he's learning.

I feel sorry for people who have to try to get good grades that don't come naturally.

What do you mean?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, i do mean.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, I'm only somewhat smart, but I work like hell.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Both intelligence and hard work are important factors in determining your grades.

I'm pretty sure if we all tried harder at school we would all be "A" students. But, sadly most of us are content with just getting by. Including myself...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I disagree. I know plenty of people who try really hard in school but only get Bs and Cs. A lot of people could get As if they tried harder, but that's certainly not true for everyone.

I know someone who never does his homework or studies but still has straight As just from getting 100s on every test... No clue how he does it.

Your teacher must have an extremely strange grading scale. Homework and classwork are the main percentage of the grades in every class I've had.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The most tests have ever been worth in my class is 50%. Maybe a college student? They don't usually check homework.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My math and science class weighs tests as 80%...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My friend slept in every maths class, and then was the only one to get 100 on the test. True story.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I literally sat in my math class, flirted with the person next to me, and did nothing. I walked away with an A.

I don't know about "mainly." The smartest people I know get stellar grades and do almost nothing. These are the same people that walk away with 2400s on their SATs. Some people are naturally smart and don't have to work hard, and their grades reflect this. I think pretty much everyone with good grades is smart (unless they are cheating, bribing, or the classes are ridiculously easy),so good grades do show intelligence. However, people with bad grades don't have to be dumb. They could just not be trying, or they could be bad test takers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But you have to be smart to know you should be working hard.

I think there's a difference between being smart and having a good memory. After all, school is 95% memorization. It's being savvy and intuitive that makes someone smart. In my opinion, anyway.
