It's funny to think that atheists created religion. amirite?
by Anonymous11 years ago
People created religion. They were not atheist before there was the idea of a god. "a"-theist. A meaning non. You can't be against something if the idea of it doesn't exist.

Atheist doesn't mean against religion or god(s). It just means not believing in a god or gods. Before there was religion, technically everyone was an atheist because there was no concept of a god.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Against the idea of god(s). Not personally against like you don't like them.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in the existance of a god(s). A theist is someone who does believe in a god(s) and the prefix "a" negates it.
by Anonymous11 years ago
And how can you not believe in something if it does not exist yet?
by Anonymous11 years ago
I don't believe in blue people with wings and tails. That's didn't seem too hard.
by Anonymous11 years ago
But quite clearly the idea of blue people with wings and tails exist giving you the oppertunity to not believe in it.

I don't think I understand what this has to do with anything. If you don't believe in god you're an atheist, or at least have some atheistic beliefs. If the idea of a god has never been introducted, then you probably don't believe in one.
by Anonymous11 years ago
you don't get it do you. It's impossible to not believe in something who's idea has never been thought of. A sponge does not believe in god because a sponge can not think. This does not make it an atheist.
by Anonymous11 years ago
You're right; I don't get it. It doesn't believe in a god. Therefore it is an athiest.

I think a good argument for Chasing_Echo's case can be found in the etymology of the word. A prefix can't be attached onto a word that doesn't exist yet, just like you can't reject something without it existing. "Theist" must have come before "atheist" in order for the idea of rejecting a god to exist.
by Anonymous11 years ago
I think we're using slightly different definitions. My definition is more broad, saying that an athiest doesn't believe in a god, not that they reject the idea of a god.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Hm, it's true, isn't it? At least of the very first religion; before that point, there was no other option, was there?
by Anonymous11 years ago
They would have to have been theists... atheists would not create religion. Someone who believed in a god or gods created religion.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Apparantly atheists can't change their mind and convert to a religion.
by Anonymous11 years ago
But in this context, they were an atheist at a point, and became a theist before conversion, or without conversion at all.
by Anonymous11 years ago
So at one point (presumably), everyone was an atheist, and there was no concept of "god." Then one day someone got a crazy idea that there was this higher being out there. That person changed from an atheist to a theist, right? But in my mind, it was AFTER this conversion that they created religion, therefore it was created by a theist, not an atheist.

It depends what you consider a religion, just belief in God(s), or having an organized set of beliefs that others can follow as well.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Ahhh, I hadn't thought of that. I define religion as the latter; under the former definition, I would agree with this post.
