+501 Happiness in intelligent people is one of the rarest things you know, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I used to think this too but then I started smoking pot. Now I'm just as smart and always happy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm smart, why does smoking pot only make me happy for 2-5 hours?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Respiratory problems sure are awesome!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Luckily using a vaporiser not only gets you higher but is also as dangerous as inhaling water vapor.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Eat it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Same for me, except replace "starting smoking pot" with "got a cat" y

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm intelligent and unhappy, my dad is intelligent and unhappy. My sister is extremely intelligent and extremely happy, so she defies this rule. But I'd say it's usually true.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know plenty of happy and intelligent people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

OP's username seems fitting.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's a quote from him, lol. I posted this from my phone, though, so I couldn't use the citation feature.

I know v_v I realized that shortly after it got potd, but figured I should stay consistent in the comments.

I don't think it's so much that intelligent people 'see the evil in the world' and simply can't get beyond that. I think it's more that they see the evil in themselves, and that they strive so hard to understand their world and their lives and themselves that they struggle to feel contentment with what they already know. They are intelligent, and so of course they are going to seek meaning and discovery in life. These pursuits, however, are so blatenty daunting - and likely impossible - that the intelligent person is unhappy.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Damn. Spot-on.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Another thing is that someone who is intelligent finds it sometimes 'hard' (I'm not sure what word would describe it best) or frustrating to to people who aren't as intelligent, and then they realize how useless it is to try to 'teach' people who aren't as intellligent to make better choices and think wiser/more rational thoughts, and they become seemingly cynical. Because otherwise they just end up dealing with indefatigable stupidity. And like someone else said above, I'm also (hopefully) intelligent and (unfortunately) find it hard to be happy, my father is way more intelligent and even more unhappy, my mother and sister are not very intelligent and they are so happy I can't even stand it sometimes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Agreed. I've seen videos of intelligent people attempting to teach young earth creationists basic science, and by the end of the video they're usually either openly furious or clearly trying to withhold their inner anger. That could certainly cause unhappiness.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Usually that stuff just makes me laugh. Stupidity can be funny if you look at it right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you're a user on here could you please message me?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm intelligent and I could care less about understanding the world, I'm just here to enjoy it while it lasts.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ignorance is bliss.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I mean, it's on the same post. http://amirite.net/706616/1667805

His comment was first.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My mistake.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No, Magnus is bliss

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Intelligence and happiness are inversely related

by Anonymous 12 years ago

According to Actual Statistics, it's the opposite.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Is According to Actual Statistics a movie or a book?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Nirvana's unreleased album, actually..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'd call myself intelligent and happy... I think I'm happy because I'm intelligent. I can realize my life is so much better than kids who don't even know their parents and live in terrible houses.. Plus I try to be a good person in most of what I do so at the end of the day I'm pretty content.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How come when my grades go down I get sadder?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm happy. So that can only mean... I is a exception!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well we all know that you're not intelligent, especially with that grammar.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You didn't get it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Was I suppose to get that you were acting as an idiot on purpose? I got //that//, but that shit is old bro.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I was using the rhetorical device of irony. Maybe I should just delete the comment. But no, I will embrace my failures!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Much respect.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's people who are intelligent that become unhappy. It's those who also have wisdom that can overcome their unhappiness.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm a rather intelligent person (or at least //I// think so) and I find the most enjoyment out of intellectual pursuits. When I'm at school, the best parts of my day are discussions in philosophy class or learning a new theorem in math class or any activity in any subject, really, as strange as that may sound. And then when I get home, I spend my free time writing. In that sense, I'm happy //because// I'm intelligent.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Someone really needs to make some sort of machine that can read your mind because I have absolutely no idea how to put my thoughts on this post into words. And it's pissing me off.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I would try, but this comment was the most perfect phrasing I could possibly ask for. (I know most perfect is kind of redundant, but I like it) http://amirite.net/706616/1667527

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah it's a great comment, but that's not what I am trying to say.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe something about never really fitting into regular society and not making legitimate human connections. Not because people see that you're smart and think you're weird. They actually think you're really funny and a lot of people like you. It's just that you go home at night after being with them knowing that on many levels you are not accepted. Something inside of you keeps you from being one of them. No girl will ever see you as more than a person to make them laugh or help them with something. No person will ever be your true friend and see you as someone special to them over anyone else. A best friend so to speak. You will have very nice conversations with your own family, but for some reason you can't really connect with them and let them know your problems. For some reason it's all because your mind will only see things in separate sections. It's useful in debate and class because you can be strategical and figure things out easier, but it is the one thing that keeps you from ever really connecting with someone. Also it can help you think of better jokes. But your mind is always wholly separate from theirs. You will always, in some way, be alone. But I could be wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm relatively intelligent and I'm almost always happy. I //like// being intelligent, and the rest of my life is pretty happy, too. I tend to just shake off any stress or take care of it most of the time.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Shake off a little arrogance and a little smartness you'll be chill and happy as a baby duck in a meadow of whatever baby ducks like.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

i like turtles

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm guessing you're not one the type of person people view as intelligent.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't know about that. From my experience, the intelligent people (or at least the ones at my school) seem to be pretty happy. The people who aren't quite as smart seem to always complain about everything.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But finding things to complain about and being truly unhappy are very different things.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I know plenty of happy, intelligent people, therefore I disagree

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How do you they are happy?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Because they exhibit traits of happiness. I guess they could all be secretly masking depression but that seems statistically unlikely.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

See I don't know if my friends are really intelligent or just erudite. But the ones who claim to be intelligent are sad sacks of crap.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My intelligence comes out of my mouth in a smartass manner, therefore friends have become scarce. That is what makes me unhappy, not that I am aware of the worlds problems or shit like that. My lack of companionship is what depresses me.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You can stop being a smartass and even be really nice to people. It's actually not that hard. That being said, it will not bring you any kind of real friends.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm happy...whether or not I'm intelligent? Who's counting. I do fine in school, and I'm rather disciplined.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hmmm.. Maybe our definition of intelligence is wrong then..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They're doing it wrong.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Shouldn't you punch yourself in the bollocks for posting a Hemmingway-quote without noting it, and then take credit for it as 'post of the day'? By the way - the qoute says that intelligent people understand the stupidity, stupidity and the fragilesness of human life, which they can not just forget. Therefor hapiness is for the dum - Like they say in 'A simple man' where Colin Firth indescretely conpares his boyfriend with the dog - 'it seems the dummest creatures are the happiest'

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Notice, the user name is Ernest Hemmingway.

I get phases of depression where I just can't deal with the world anymore (usually timed with my president coming on TV. No, I'm not American). It's frustrating and overwhelming to see the big picture and know we're headed to our doom while - being an indvidual - there's hardly anything to do about it, and everyone else seems to be extremely happy over their new designer shoes. *sigh* So, I'm either an intellectual or a pessimist. Also, I like shoes dearly.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Most of the YYAs: "Well, I'm super depressed about the world and I am a fucking genius, must be spot on."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

that is because everything anyone says or do to them is over thinked ..e.g. "your crush sat next to you in a lecture, normal people might think of it as a good thing, but intelligent people might over think about the whole situation and thinks she's just trying to get closer to the hot guy beside me and i'm in her fucking way, or she probably needs help with her homework...etc.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I really didn't expect to see so many people boasting their intellect.. I know it makes sense to announce your intelligence because it's relevant to the post but the whole "I'm intelligent and I..." Thing seems to be everyone trying to get a pat on the back.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

All the intelligent people in my family are the ones who suffer from depression, including me. So this is a good general rule. My best friend is extremely intelligent and very happy, though. But she's a ginger so most rules don't apply to her. On an unrelated note, I literally JUST finished reading A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemmingway today.
