+234 How did we come up with "eleven"? I mean, twelve makes sense (two), and thirteen (three), and so forth, but you can't really see where "eleven" comes from. It's weird, amirite?

It comes from the Old English "endleofan," which roots back to German, "ainlif." This word breaks down into "one" and "to remain" as in, there's one left over.
