+194 It's ridiculous how many people were pissed off that a black man is playing Cinna in The Hunger Games. God forbid there be any black people in future America, especially one that is described as being quiet and calm! amirite?

It's especially terrible when people say "but Cinna is supposed to be white!" when he was never described as such in the book...this is a subtle form of white privilege

by Anonymous 12 years ago

He was described as having green eyes, I believe, which is why many perceived him as white, since light-colored eyes are mostly seen on light-skinned people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are plenty of black people with natural green eyes....

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know. That's why I said "mostly" because light eyes are more common on lighter skinned people than darker skinned people. I'm not saying that it's impossible, only that it's more common. However, I absolutely love the idea of Lenny Kravitz as Cinna (I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't really judge) simply because he's Lenny Kravitz and fits the character perfectly.

Yeah, I'm actually really happy they casted a black man as Cinna because I pictured him as black while I was reading the book. No idea why though

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I actually think I did, too, but I also read the books after they announced the cast, though he was the only one I really remembered while reading them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I pictured him black too! I never really pictured Portia, she looked weird though. And I pictured Rue and Thresh black too.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hey, everyone in the capitol did crazy stuff to their body. the green eyes could have just been contacts

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's been said that cinna's gold eyeliner was his ONLY alteration.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah. I remember that now. Silly me

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I always envisioned him as being ridiculously sassy, regardless of his ethnicity. I don't usually pay too much attention to the physical traits of the characters as described in books, as I usually create the image that I want for them in my head.

I'll admit that when I was reading the books I didn't picture him as black. However, when I saw the movie I thought that Lenny Kraviz was absolutely perfect for the part. He played him so well and acted just as I thought Cinna would. I wished he was in it more though...

I kinda somehow imagined Cinna to look like he did in the movie, and I was not disappointed at all by how he was portrayed in the film. I think they did really good overall but especially in keeping the characters true to the book.

This has nothing to do with this post, but I'm going to see it today and I'm fucking excited

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Don't be surprised if it wasn't up to your expectations.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

For some reason, I always imagine Cinna as a black man when I read the book. I think they did a perfect job of creating him in the movie.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My favorite is when people got pissed off that Rue is black. It's like, did you even read the book?! It specifically says she's black!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow, I didn't know people were pissed about it. I thought Lenny was perfect as Cinna. I think the reason why the movie was so good is because Collins actually wrote the script, along with the director, and was involved with the casting and the movie along the way. That was a smart move, considering the movie was so true to the characters and the emotional arcs. It was so smart, in fact, that I saw it three times already...I regret nothing.

3 times? Aaaah lucky. Where I live it's only coming out on the 13th of April. Three weeks of agony!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Really?? It came out in India on the release day in the States! I was surprised but so happy, sucks that it's taking ages! :(

I'd probably stay away from the internet because that's going to be a hot topic for a couple of weeks, and you'll be tortured a whole lot more. Haha, I'd probably go crazy :P The movie already broke the weekend opening record for a nonsequel! It's after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight.
