+403 Graffiti is an under appreciated art amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And it's better that way. If everyone was appreciative and accepting of graffiti, it would lose a lot of it's beauty. Some cities have designated graffiti walls that are specially placed for "hoodlums" to come and mark up, but that's just lame and stupid.

I'm sure the people whose property they're using for their own purposes aren't appreciative of it. You can't really blame them. Yes, it is art, but it's sort of a destructive type of art. And we can't really change that, because graffiti fans will say "it's just lame and stupid" if graffitists (is that a word?) use a medium that maybe belonged to them. I'm not saying it's not a perfectly attractive, expressive art form or whatever; I'm saying that the reason it's underappreciated is that it involves vandalism.

@Chapstick I agree I no way-ed because I genuinely don't believe its under appreciated. The idea of graffiti is having your art on display to the world, being as public and noticeable as possible. and when people see it, people all the time say "oh wow look, how cool" and such. Its appreciated well enough in my opinion. Its not like graffiti is some amazing art type that deserves ridiculous amounts of praise. I certainly don't believe any graffiti artist could rise to any name significance like regular artists, people as in Rosco, the Riveras, or Picasso. They're nameless artists with the humble, unpaid job of decorating cities.

so long as it isn't just random swear words and names scribbled on walls...

that first one wasn't graffiti. That was a mural of a man with a moustache...I don't see how that applies. And generally when graffiti is being done, it's to claim territory, so the obviousl thing to write is your tag name.

Barnes & Nobles has books on it, I'd feel appreciated as hell if Barnes & Nobles had a book even with my name in it. So in terms of art, I think it's appreciated. However, artwork in general is under appreciated, people are more focused with media and modern technology so much that art doesn't matter like it used to a few centuries ago.
