+197 You never turn your mobile phone off at a gas station, even when there are signs telling you it's dangerous, amirite?

Huh? We don't have signs like that...

its not dangerous

Of course it isn't. Spontaneous combustion is a perfectly normal and socially acceptable thing, amirite?

cell phones don't cause gas pumps to blow up. I know because I watched a myth busters episode about it. And if they did, it wouldn't be considered spontaneous combustion, because spontaneous combustion is defined as combustion that occurs without an external ignition, but in this case the cell phone's electricity would be the igniting source. And lastly, I didn't comment on how socially acceptable being on fire is. That is just irrelevant.

I'm well aware of all of those things, and your last comment about my comment being irrelevant isn't true. The last thing I read said something about eletrostatic discharge being responsible for igniting fuel vapor, so I would be surprised if mobile phones, especially modern ones that are designed to use less and less power, could generate enough external energy to have the same effect. I can only speculate on whether there is another reason for why phones are not to be used. Spontaneous combustion doesn't only have to be defined by the text on Wikipedia; for something to be spontaneous, it can just be a random event that occurs without warning. The fact that it is socially acceptable (or not) was highlighting the fact that people don't randomly go up in flames often enough for us to be blasé about it.

I thought the myth was that it's dangerous if you actually use it, not if it's just turned on...?

I've never seen a sign like that in my life and I had no idea it was dangerous. I always use my phone at gas stations.
